Updated: Mail Theft Suspects out of Byron Lead to Pursuit, Crash in Oakley, Dog Shot

At 12:29 pm Monday the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a vehicle crash with injuries in the 100 block of E Cypress Road in the City of Oakley.

The crash was a result of a Contra Costa County Sheriff Deputy pursuit which resulted in officers shooting the suspects dog who became aggressive with law enforcement.

On Monday, August 6, 2018, at about 10:54 AM, a Delta Station Deputy Sheriff took a report of a theft from a US Postal Service mail delivery truck in Byron. While checking the area for the suspects, he came upon the suspect vehicle.

The suspects fled, leading the Deputy on a pursuit, which went from Byron Highway to Main Street in Oakley. The Deputy terminated the pursuit because of the suspect’s reckless driving. Oakley Police Officers came upon the suspect vehicle, which crashed into a steel pole at the intersection of Main Street and O’Hara Avenue.

The driver was detained at the scene. The passenger fled on foot with a dog on a leash. When Officers and Deputies caught up to the passenger and tried to restrain her, she released the dog which attacked and bit an Oakley Police Officer. The officer fired his weapon at the dog. The dog tried to bite the officer a second time. A Deputy Sheriff shot at the dog, which was found deceased nearby.

The suspects were later booked at the Martinez Detention Facility after being cleared at a hospital:

38-year-old Kenneth Grosenbach of San Francisco was booked on the following charges: possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evasion, ID theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy. He is being held in lieu of $140,000 bail.

36-year-old Linnell Bonner of San Francisco. She was booked on the following charges: ID theft, possession of stolen property, obstructing an officer, and probation violation. She is being held without bail.

The property stolen in the original theft was recovered.

Sheriff’s Office Chase Ends at O’Hara Ave & Main St

Today shortly after noon a Deputy Sheriff was investigating a theft case out of the Discovery Bay area. The suspect vehicle in the theft was located and Sheriff’s Office personnel attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle fled from the Deputy. A vehicle pursuit ensued, the suspect vehicle ultimately collided with a pole at the intersection of Main Street and O’Hara Ave in Oakley.

At the termination of the pursuit, two occupants, a male and female, attempted to flee on foot, both were captured almost immediately. A large dog was also in the suspect vehicle. The dog became aggressive with the officers. Fearing for their safety, one Oakley PD Officer and one Sheriffs Deputy fired their weapon at the dog.

The driver of the suspect vehicle is being transported to the hospital for injuries sustained during the collision. He was conscious and alert when transported. The female passenger is being interviewed by members of the Sheriffs Office. It appears the dog will not survive the injuries.

The Sheriffs Office is handling the investigation of the theft and the vehicle pursuit. The Oakley Police Department is handling the collision reporting. Further media inquiries should be referred to the Contra Costa Sheriffs Office.
