Update: Victims from Antioch Identified in Fatal DUI Related Crash on SR-24

by ECT

The Contra Costa CHP is reporting That at about 4:01am, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a solo vehicle collision that came off SR-24 and onto Boulevard Circle at Boulevard Way in Walnut Creek.

Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, two passengers from the 2000 Silver Honda Civic were declared deceased, the driver was still alive but with major injuries, and two other passengers had also suffered major injuries.

All parties were transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of the identities of the deceased parties, please refer to them for that information.

In the initial investigation, it appears that the 18yr old female driver from Antioch was driving the Honda on eastbound SR-24 and approaching the I-680 interchange. For reasons unknown that are still under investigation, she allowed the Honda to veer completely off SR-24 and overturned and crashed onto Boulevard Circle, which is below SR-24, causing major damage.

Two male passengers, both 18 yrs old and both from Anitoch, were immediately pronounced deceased upon emergency personal arrival. Two other female 18yr old passengers from Antioch and Oakley suffered major injuries and transported to the hospital.

The Driver, RAMYA RAMEY, DOB-1/30/2000 from Antioch, suffered major injuries as well and was also transported to the hospital where she was placed under arrest for multiple counts of FELONY MANSLAUGHTER for killing two of her passengers and multiple counts of FELONY DUI causing major injuries to her other passengers.

This is a tragic incident where alcohol and underage drinking & driving was involved. This investigation is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 or 1-(800)-TELL-CHP. Thank you.

Very sad but this tragedy could have been easily avoided. Regardless of the thousands of times the message is repeated every year, people still drink and drive!!!!

Bad actions have tragic consequences and unfortunately this act of stupidity resulted in death!

Literally one of the EASIEST freeways to drive, at a time when NO ONE is on the road and you do this???

Lola Saavedra Aug 12, 2018 - 9:44 pm

Yes, Jane! At that time, on an early Sunday morning, there are practically no vehicles there . . no curves on the freeway .. straight t an arrow! This woman must have really been hammered!

How many people did this idiot have stuffed in her car? Five? Was she zonked on booze and dope?

Mr P Aug 12, 2018 - 7:39 pm

Because of a choice to drink & get behind the wheel, she wrecked her own life and the lives of the families of these victims. Prayers going out to these poor families. People always think it won’t happen to them..?

No excuses Aug 12, 2018 - 8:25 pm

Unfortunately all these young people made bad choices. The driver chose to drink and drive. The passengers chose to ride in a car when the driver was drinking and or smoking. Im sure all those friends have been out many times together before last night and luckily made it home safely until last night. Easily could’ve taken Uber Lyft and or called a family member to come and pick them up. Coming home at that hour is way too late and never nothing good happens at that time. This one is going to hurt for a very long long time for all families involved. It will tear apart these once close friends and the ones that survive will forever be sad for their entire lives. God bless your families in the worst time that you can ever imagine. Condolences and prayers to all.

Get high and fly, don’t drink and drive.

Mark Kiernan Aug 13, 2018 - 12:56 pm

Her mother was on tv saying what a good kid she was etc… and was challenging the allegations of DUI. The fact is that parents often have no idea what their children are up to, just because they get good grades in school doesn’t mean they are not up to no good, in fact the smart ones are better at concealing their bad behavior from their parents. Just exactly what did mom think her daughter was doing out that way at 4:00 in the morning anyway, studying with classmates???m

My deepest sympathy for all involved and their families. A tragedy for so many. Don’t let someone drink then drive don’t get in a car with someone who is drunk and going to drive. A very sad reminder to call a cab or Uber or family before you find yourself in a tragic situation. My heart breaks for this awful incident.

18 and drunk behind the wheel at 4am, I wonder how fast they were going as well, and who supplied the underage girl with alcohol, they should be prosecuted too! Sorry for the loss, maybe she can learn from her actions, she has the rest of her life and many many years behind bars to think about it no.

Its sad, but Darwinism at its finest wins again!

Lady k Aug 13, 2018 - 2:49 pm

It’s sad all the way around there has been nothing saying toxicology reports states they were drinking until then I feel she could have been tired and fell asleep I’ve done it & im sure a lot of you have too. Quit tryin & convicting this child it could have been yours. Just my opinion as a parent.

ChuckieTheCat Aug 13, 2018 - 3:59 pm

It takes a lot time to get toxicology reports … they don’t just whip those out.

It says right there FELONY DUI.

slapstick Aug 13, 2018 - 4:35 pm

Says in the article “felony DUI” and in the gofundme it states “In tragic situations like this when a kids life is taken due to underage drinking and driving we can’t do anything “

After seeing a news segment showing the crushed vehicle, it is miraculous that some survived that 40-50 foot fall.

Elizabeth Aug 13, 2018 - 11:13 pm

Actually, while driving from SR-24 onto 680, many times I’ve seen people swerve trying to get onto 680 in the daytime with moderate traffic. For some reason, there seems to be a difficulty to make a smooth transition from SR-24 into 680 and that’s possibly because of poor traffic engineering design. Making this transition might be more difficult to do at night, which it shouldn’t. Those things do happen and apparently there was a similar incident there some years ago. Maybe a traffic engineering specialist can take a look at this.

No excuses Aug 14, 2018 - 10:57 pm

No Elizabeth open up your eyes! The roadway is fine and no one should have any problems making it through that transition…Unless you have a driver that adds to it making it difficult…like speeding, along with adding alcohol and maybe mix some drugs in the equation. That’s a perfect recipe for disaster and tragedy as it was in this case. That roadway has been like that for a very long time. It’s not the fault of the roadway, if it was, then everybody in every car that drives through there would crash and fly off the freeway and we would have fatal accidents there everyday outside of the commute hours. If you’ve seen this then maybe you’re driving too fast as well as everyone else on the freeway. It does not need to be looked at by a traffic engineer Elizabeth. Just slow down as you drive through there. Don’t get your feelings hurt when you finally hear the truth.

Elizabeth Aug 14, 2018 - 11:56 pm

You didn’t read my posting closely. Where did I say that I had problems making that transition from SR-24 to the 680? I said I OBSERVED other drivers who “overcorrected” and I’ve seen that quite a few times. None of the ones I saw had their vehicles crash down. Luckily, the realized the potential danger and transitioned smoothly. I do not speed … I drive with the flow of traffic. Driving that freeway at night, there is poor lighting and there is a chance that the driver of that vehicle had trouble seeing clearly. I have no idea whether the driver was drunk or on drugs. Maybe she was or maybe she wasn’t. A traffic engineer might be someone to consult. What’s with the “feelings hurt” phrase? LMAO!

No excuses Aug 15, 2018 - 6:48 pm

Elizabeth my dear safe driver, you got your feelings hurt lmao. Like I said, It’s not the roadway at fault. It’s HOW people travel through that transition. If you drive the speed limit trough there then no one will have a problem. Let’s take alcohol out of the equation for a sec. If you drive at an unsafe speed and maybe you’re distracted by cell phones or just in conversation with your passengers or falling sleep at the wheel etc. you will overcorrect and you will crash your car. A traffic engineer doesn’t need to go out there unless there are multiple crashes that happen at that location and that are happening at any speed over/under or at the speed limit. Also including weather conditions which had nothing to do with this accident. If she was going at a slower speed the car would’ve stayed on the freeway instead of flying over the railing. When was the last time a car crashed there and flew over the railing and landed on the city streets at that location? I’ll answer that for you…never!

I believe there was a very similar accident in the same spot about 1 year ago.
