Update: Fremont Police Believe Suspect who Shot Officers is Dead

Just after 9:00 am Thursday, it was confirmed by the Fremont Police Department that the suspect believed to have shot two officers was dead.

During a Press Conference, Geneva Bosques, public affairs manager, confirmed a deceased subject was found inside the closet of a home believed to be the suspect. She stated it will take some time to confirm the body, as the fire in the residence is now being investigated.

She stated both officers remain at the hospital, 1 officer is in critical condition, another is in stable condition.

Bosques explained that throughout the night, Newark and Union City Police Department negotiators were on scene talking with the subject.

Fremont-Fire-Dept-2Police also said they had receive to believe the suspect was injured from yesterday’s shooting and did not rule out if that may be the cause of death.

Police said they also did not rule out that the fire may have been started from tear gas being deployed by tactical teams—but could not say for certain. The suspect’s death is under investigation and could not confirm if a firearm was recovered.

Local streets in the area have also been re-opened.

Police said they were still working to confirm if there was more than 1 suspect involved in yesterday’s shooting.

Police say the home was empty and confirmed everyone who lived in the home were not inside.

  • 12:05 am: UPDATE: We now have an armed barricaded suspect situation. Police now have containment and negotiations have begun. Shelter in place still in effect.
  • 1:05 am: An hour later. Negotiations still in progress.
  • 2:05 am: UPDATE: Two hours in to the negotiations process and officers are still actively working towards a resolution.
  • 2:22 am: UPDATE: All displaced residents from within the perimeter are being moved to the Fremont Senior Center (40086 Paseo Padre Pkwy) with the American Red Cross. Cots, blankets and food available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
  • 3:06 am: UPDATE: Gas has been deployed inside of the house. Suspect will not come out. Officers still working through negotiations.
  • 4:07 am: Early morning is approaching and officers on scene are still working on getting the suspect out of the house.
  • 5:03 am: Oakland PD SWAT has relieved ACSO at the scene. Nothing further at this time.

Wednesday, June 1 Information

Today at 1:33 pm, a Fremont police patrol officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Fremont Boulevard and Washington Boulevard. The driver of the vehicle backed into the officers patrol vehicle and shots were fired. The officer was injured and the suspect(s) fled on foot.

Fremont officers encountered the suspect(s) for a second time on the 1300 block of Roberts Avenueat 1:43 pm.  During the encounter multiple shots were fired again and a second Fremont officer was injured. Both officers have been transported to trauma centers. We are not providing information on the officers injuries or their condition at this time.

We believe that we have at least one primary suspect outstanding and possibly more.  We have limited information that the main suspect is a Hispanic male adult, approximately 6′ tall wearing a Giants shirt and shorts.  We cannot confirm if he is injured.

We would like to thank all of the law enforcement agencies who are in Fremont assisting with this operation.

5:09 Update

Both officers sustained gunshot wounds. One is currently in surgery. Out of respect for their families and our FPD family, we will not be releasing any further information regarding their conditions or regarding injuries sustained.

We thank you for your concern and support.

The focus is a tactical operation in which the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is taking the lead and providing assistance.

We will provide updates as available.

6:05 pm update:

Per Fremont Police, both officers are out of surgery, 1 was shot twice. One is in stable another in critical condition
