Underground Diesel Leak Shuts Down Hillcrest Ave in Antioch

by ECT

At 7:05 pm Sunday, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to a report of a gas leak in the area of Hillcrest Avenue at Sunset Drive in the City of Antioch.

Upon arriving on scene, crews located what they believe to be diesel fuel and immediately requested the roadway be shut down by Antioch Police and requested County Hazmat to respond.

Upon further investigation, crews were able to determine the substance was diesel fuel coming from a pipe about 20-30 feet underground from Kinder Morgan — one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America.

According to Robert Marshall, CONFIRE spokesperson, he said the roadway would be shut down for several hours and possibly into Monday. He said in a worst case scenario, the roadway could be shut down for several days depending on the size of the leak, where it was located and how much cleanup would be required.

He did say that they did identify where the leak was coming from and were able to shut it down.

As result of a working Contra Costa HazMat incident, CONFIRE said Hillcrest is closed between Highway 4 and Larkspur, and Sunset is closed between Hillcrest and Devpar Court.
