Unattended Candle Causes Fire at Antioch “Hoarder House”

by ECT

At 6:15 am Thursday, Contra Costa County firefighters were dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire on Sunwood Ct. in Antioch.

Units arrived on scene to locate smoke and flames coming from the balcony on the second story of the home with the fire extending into the roof. Firefighters located two residents of the home and all occupants were accounted for.

The home, which was deemed a “hoarder house”, made access difficult for firefighters as flames extended into the attic line.

There was debris, material, and other obstacles throughout the entire home and outside that made access extremely difficult reported Battalion Chief Ed Gonzales.

Firefighters were able to control the fire from the exterior then transition into an interior attack.  Crews remained on scene performing extensive overhaul for around 3-hours.

CONFIRE also reported that one of the residents had minor burns to his face and was treated on scene.

Gonzalez reported the fire was started from unattended candles. Antioch Code Enforcement red tagged the home unfit to occupy.

Two residents were displaced and the American Red Cross provided assistance.
