U-Turn Gone Wrong as 12-Gallons of Gas Spills into Drain

by ECT

At 5:40 pm Thursday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a vehicle accident after a woman making a U-turn to sharp and hit the center median and took out a pole and ripped her gas tank dumping gallons of gas down the drain.

Crews on scene stated the vehicle had about 22-gallons of gas; however, they estimate that maybe 10-gallons or so made its way down a drain causing a strong odor smell.  Due to the gas, crews were forced to shut down Empire Road at Lone Tree Way which prevented cars from headed into Oakley—about an hour after the incident, a single lane was eventually opened.

The accident caused ECCFPD crews to stay on scene for 3 hours and 21 minutes and required Contra Costa Hazardous Materials to come out and work the scene to test the air and water. No one appeared hurt in the accident, but it did require both Antioch Police and Brentwood Police to respond to help control traffic and ensure safety of the crews as they worked.

It is unknown if the driver will be cited for the incident or if they will be charged by Contra Costa Hazardous Materials.

Below are pictures followed by a second incident to show how slim resources are for ECCFPD.

While on scene of this accident, Engine 88 was spotted heading to a medical call from Folsom Drive in Antioch all the way to Ruby Terrace because the remaining ECCFPD resources were fighting a large grass fire out on Marsh Creek and Deer Valley. The trip was a 6-mile,  10-12 minute response depending on traffic.

Had Station 52 been available, it was a 1.7 mile trip within 4-minutes. Had Station 54 been available, it was a 2-mile trip at 6-minutes.
