At 10:41 am Tuesday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a residential structure fire on Putter Ct. in Brentwood. A neighbor reported hearing a “boom” sound and said the side of the house was on fire causing a full response from fire crews.

Initial reports were that this was a gas fire of some sorts, however, when crews were on scene they quickly saw this was a garbage can fire on the side of the home that extended into the subfloor of the home.  Responding Engines 3, 4, and 5 were quickly cancelled once they arrived on scene as Engine 54 and Engine 52 mopped up the incident.

According to Battalion Chief Jeff Burris, fire crews were forced to cut a 2×4 foot hole on the exterior of the home along with cutting a smaller hole inside the home to ensure the fire was out did not further extend.  Burris also stated the residents said they had no hot items in the trash cans which were completely destroyed.

Crews were on scene for roughly an hour and no word yet on the estimated damages.
