Today: Antioch to Host Community Meeting to Discuss Homeless

by ECT

The City of Antioch and Mayor Sean Wright will be holding a community meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the homeless, homeless issues, and how they are impacting the Scenic Waterfront Walkway that flows into the Antioch downtown area and shopping district.

Merchants and residents are invited to have a thought provoking discussion on this complicated issue that is affecting the community.

According to the 2018 Contra Costa Point in Time Homeless Count, the City of Antioch had the most homeless in the County with 350 followed by Richmond (270) and Concord (252).

In East Contra Costa, Pittsburg had 110 homeless followed by Bay Point (61), Oakley (49), Brentwood (35), Bethel Island (7) and Discovery Day (1).

If you go:
4:00 pm at the Antioch Police Department Community Room located at 300 L Street.

Saw a poor guy sleeping under the Contra Loma bridge this morning. I feel so bad for them when it’s so freaking cold out.

First off we need to look at this whole situation differently. Being ‘Homeless’ is a symptom or a consequence of everyday regular life gone wrong, financial disaster, drugs, mental health or just basically incapable of functioning at the level of a responsible adult. Most of these conditions can be improved with adequate intervention or assistance before these people fail at life to the point that they become homeless. If you saw a child walking towards a cliff out in the roadway, you would stop and scoop them up and bring them to safety.
Why can’t society get it together to stop people from putting themselves in so much danger that they are complete failures as adults. I feel bad for people who lose everything through no fault of their own, but realistically if they make better choices and manage their life responsibly, they should be able to handle unforseen things that come up.

Many of these people get to our area via a program called “BUS THERAPY” where other states and cities buy them a one-way ticket via Greyhound. I know this because my relatives in those states told me that is being done and that now the “homeless” are California’s problem.

It’s not societies responsibility to see that adults don’t screw up. What do you expect to happen? Go door to door to make sure everyone is employed, not drinking or doing drugs, not committing crimes and paying their bills on time? Get real.

Personally i try to avoid these locations at all costs as they are a hazard to the public, i will even go to a different city to do my shopping as i can no longer support Pittsburg or Antioch due to the homeless taking over. Cant stand being bombarded entering and leaving business with all these unstable untrustworthy homeless around casing vehicles and houses for their next fix Clean up the area and it will do much better economically.

I grew up playing on the railroad tracks in Antioch. A lot of the homeless problem is a drug problem not a financial problem. Get the drugs out of Antioch and the Homeless will dissipate. As Mark said, their problems are surmountable

Why don’t I see homeless people in Danville, Livermore, Lafayette, Sunnyvale Alamo, Orinda, Moraga?

I see homeless people in Orinda and Moraga. Not as many, but they’re there. If you lived there, you would see them.

Many decades ago, the Antioch Ledger took an active interest in the problem of homelessness and sent forth Lynne Dobson on a 1 on 1 one week interview with the homeless … Her findings were startling,,, basically, they just want to be left alone, some needed help but just plain gave up… Maybe it is time to go back into the streets and found out from them what their problem is and go from there.. better than just talking about it and doing nothing…

Homelessness in Antioch is real and not always related to drug use or irresponsible adult choices. Some of us couch surf or live in our cars and hold on to the minimum wage jobs we have but still can not afford the cost of a rental. With the cost of rentals increasing over 25 percent in the last 5 years in Antioch it is impossible !! Maybe some affordable housing units would decrease homelessness.

By no means an expert on this problem, but I definitely know that harassing the homeless and forcing them from one location to another is NOT the answer!
