The Three Creeks Restoration Project in Brentwood will receive $744,000 in newly-awarded state grant funding marking another major step forward for the project. The community is invited to a kickoff event on July 25.
The project will provide multiple benefits to Marsh Creek and the surrounding area by creating habitat for fish and wildlife, improving water quality, and enhancing flood protection for local residents and surrounding communities. Another key component of the project is the creation of new recreational opportunities in City of Brentwood.
The Department of Water Resources Urban Streams Program funding will continue the effort to create riparian trees, grasses and shrubs along the section of Marsh Creek near the confluence of Sand and Deer Creeks. Not far from downtown Brentwood, the project represents more than a decade of public and private partnership work to get to this point.
This grant was a partnership between American Rivers and the Flood Control District. The City of Brentwood has always been a strong proponent in providing both environmental and flood benefits along Marsh Creek. Pulte Homes is providing $1 million in funding as a condition imposed by the city of Brentwood when it granted a permit to build more than 400 single-family homes on 77 acres adjacent to the park. Two new community parks will also be part of the project, expanding the greenway along Marsh Creek.
Contra Costa District III Supervisor Mary Nejedly Piepho offered, “This project is an example of how agencies and organizations can work together to preserve habitat and create a beautiful place for the community to enjoy. I encourage residents to attend the celebratory kick off and learn more about the project.”
“The Three Creeks project is another key element in the overall mission of the Contra Costa County Flood Control District to enhance our existing creeks,” notes Assistant Chief Engineer Mike Carlson. “Beyond the flood protection to Brentwood residents, it also will protect and promote the natural resources that only a creek can provide.”
Three acres of riparian and floodplain habitat will be restored along Marsh Creek, which is home to Chinook salmon, western pond turtles, river otters, beavers, herons, and other fish and wildlife. “The Friends of Marsh Creek is proud to have been part of bringing together all the partners in this project,” adds Executive Director Diane Burgis. “By bringing the various agencies, developer and non-profit partners together, we have a terrific project that will provide better flood control protection, improved wildlife habitat, and a more natural and enjoyable open space for all to enjoy.”
The community is invited to join the many partners at a kickoff celebration on Saturday, July 25, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 a.m. The event will take place along the Marsh Creek Trail off Central Blvd. in Brentwood, between Deer Creek Lane and North Estates Drive.
