Sunday: Mayor Wade Harper Calls for Prayer Vigil

by ECT

Antioch Mayor Wade Harper and various members of clergy will hold a prayer vigil and moment of silence on Sunday, July 10 at 7:00 pm in front of the Antioch Community Center.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in various cities nationwide involving police and young African American males.  I am also concerned and outraged about the killing of police officers in Dallas Texas and other U.S. cities.  Violence is not the answer.  I grieve for the nation.  America is in crisis.”

Mayor Harper is calling for residents to pray as a community with a spirit of unity, respect and tolerance.  Let those who are in attendance stand together against hate and violence.

Prayer vigils and moments of silence are a waste of time. The mayor and the police chief should make sure APD’s officers are trained thoroughly to not bring the nation’s focus to Antioch as in Baton Rouge, LA, Falcon Heights, Mn. and Dallas, Tx.

Yeah, this will help. I really need a sarcasm tag.

He should be worried more about the crime in his own city. This coward of a mayor never addresses Antioch’s crime.

Who is footing the bill for this? Nothing at the community center is free, not even the parking lot. Is a church paying for this or is Harper’s campaign for Mayor committee paying for it?

Harper is always full of hot air. Keep praying Harper, that will fix the crime in Antioch.

Nobody charges for a prayer vigil. It’s being held in front a community center… like outside. Get real.

Antioch does rent that parking lot for car shows, or used to until the churches complained. However, that is not the point and you missed the point completely so I won’t waste any more time.

There’s a big difference between a car show and a prayer vigil. Nobody charges for prayer, regardless of where you’re praying. Don’t be ignorant.

I call BS. Televangelist’s wouldn’t exist if nobody charged for prayer.

I respect the man for his faith but faith is not enough. It reminds me of he story of the man that lived next to the river. One day on the radio he heard that a flood was coming and that it was recommended that people in his area evacuate. He said to himself I am a religious man, I will pray and God will take care of me. Sure enough the water started to rise and someone came by in a boat and offered to help him escape the rising water. He thanked the man but told him he was religious man and that he had faith that God would take care of him. Soon the water was rushing by and he had to go to the top floor of his house. A helicopter came by and lowered a rope to help him but he declined. He waved it off and said he was sure he would be okay because he was a religious man and that God would take care of him.

Well, the man drowned and when he got to heaven he was really frustrated with God. He asked God why he didn’t take care of him. God said “I sent you a warning on the radio, I sent you a row boat and then a helicopter. Why didn’t you take it?”

Wade Harper was given an opportunity to do something as a leader when he was elected mayor. God gave him that opportunity and the people of Antioch gave him that opportunity. Every time the community has had a challenge he talks about praying and bringing church leaders together. While I appreciate the sentiment I think Mr Harper is ignoring the evacuation orders, he passing up the boat and is ignoring the helicopter.

What the community needs is for the mayor to bring the message that his police force is free of officers that abuse their authority and are trained to help deescalate things. He needs to talk about the challenges the African american community faces still despite the civil rights movement. Antioch needs a leader that will be outraged, vocal and demonstrate that he is in charge. Sadly, Mr Harper has been weak in his three plus years as our mayor and as a result has contributed to a strong mistrust and a lack of faith of local government by the community he represents.

I’m sorry I missed this event. Even though these tragedies took place far from Antioch Americans were still affected and it is a horrible time for our country. We had a vigil in from of Dallas Ranch Commons for the children of Sandy Hook a few years back as well. It’s something about coming together to share and uplift and support each other. It is also honoring those who we have lost.

Nick, no matter how you twist the story Mr. Harper is campaigning for mayor. Just as all those different candidates from other cities showed up at the vigil. Yes, I was there, so was channel 7 news.
