The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff took part in Operation Cross Country, a national law enforcement action that is coordinated through the Innocence Lost National Initiative, which is a partnership between the FBI, U.S. Department of Justice and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The San Francisco Division of the FBI and multiple local and state law enforcement agencies participated in the operation from June 19-21 in every Bay Area county, running a total of 14 local operations targeting commercial child sex trafficking.

Six children were rescued throughout the Bay Area. Nationwide, 168 children were rescued while 281 pimps were arrested on various state and local charges.

Contra Costa County law enforcement agencies involved in the operation arrested five adult prostitutes and three pimps. One juvenile was rescued.

To date, the FBI and its task force partners have recovered more than 3,400 children from being exploited. The investigations and subsequent 1,450 convictions have resulted in lengthy sentences, including 14 life terms.
