Sheriff’s Office Identity 51-Year-Old Antioch Resident Who Died in West County Detention Facility

Investigators from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and the DA’s Office are continuing to investigate an in custody death that occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond.

The deceased inmate is identified as 51-year-old Kristen Hamilton of Antioch.

At approximately 12:15 PM, medical staff at the facility were on the female housing module during a routine medical call. While speaking to Hamilton, she became unresponsive. Medical staff started CPR and an ambulance and the fire department were called. Hamilton was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

The in custody death protocol was invoked. This case is being jointly investigated by the Office of the Sheriff and DA’s Office.

Hamilton had several warrants for her arrest. The charges included drug offenses, possession of stolen property and probation violation. She surrendered herself to jail on April 21, 2015 and was booked. She had prior medical conditions and went to the hospital on April 22, 2015.

The autopsy was conducted on Monday. The cause of death is pending toxicology tests.
