Sept 21: African American Health Empowerment Expo

by ECT

The African American Health Empowerment Expo on Sept. 21 has garnered the support of major healthcare providers and organizations in the East Bay. Most recently, the California Black Health Network, a statewide organization, endorsed the expo and will be sending representatives.

“Our children, families and senior adults rely on the Los Medanos Community Healthcare District to uphold our mission for a healthier community by funding the African American Health Expo,” said Bobbi Palmer, CEO of LMCHD.

“LMCHD is pleased to link with the California Black Health Network and the organizers, the African American Health Empowerment Collaborative, at this event to provide both outreach and education for the Affordable Care Act through Covered California.”

John Muir Health, Kaiser Permanente, Delta Sutter Medical Center and the Contra Costa Health Services Department have been deeply involved in the planning the expo.

“Much work is still needed to address the serious health disparities that continue to exist among African Americans,” said Dr. William Walker, Contra Costa Health Services Director.

“Collaborative community efforts such as this event help raise awareness about the issues and can help lead to better health and improved life expectancies,” Walker said.

“In keeping with our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve with quality and compassion, John Muir Health is proud to support the African American Health Empowerment Expo,” said Marion DePuit, manager for the Faith and Health Partnership at John Muir Health.

“As part of this informative, fun and inspirational day, we look forward to educating and inspiring Expo participants to take steps to improve their own health and the health of their family members,” said DePuit.

The health expo will be held Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg at no cost for the participants. Speakers and workshops about stress, high blood pressure, diet and weight control are among the offerings along with lunch, entertainment and exercise.

It just absolutely dumbfounds me as to why it is necessary to promote any racially specific event in today’s diversity empowered society. Particularly by a publicly funded agency.
