Senator Harris to Dreamers: We Made a Promise to You, and We Must Keep It

by ECT

LOS ANGELES – On Monday, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris, a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, held a roundtable at the Downtown UCLA Labor Center with eight Dreamers, who are protected from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The young people, brought to the United States as children, would also benefit from the DREAM Act – a bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Senator Harris that would ensure permanent resident status to nearly a million young people. California is home to 1 in 4 of the nation’s total DACA population.

“California is home to the most DACA recipients in the country, and America is the only country they’ve known as home,” said Senator Harris. “Thousands of DACA recipients have gone to college, served in the military, and opened small businesses – we must uphold the promise we made to these kids. I will fight to preserve the protections already given to them, and for comprehensive immigration reform because we need a long-term solution. We are a nation of immigrants and must resolve this issue on behalf of these young people.”

At the event, Senator Harris discussed her efforts to protect Dreamers and highlighted the contributions they’ve made to our economy and local communities. The Trump Administration has until September 5 to respond to a lawsuit by several state Attorneys General and decide whether they will rescind the DACA program.

Senator Harris was joined at the roundtable by advocacy groups including the Downtown UCLA Labor Center, FWD.us, the Korean Resource Center, and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, who are all at the forefront of efforts to protect Dreamers.

“We call on President Trump to protect DACA and Dreamers – and we need every single Member of Congress and Senator to co-sponsor legislation that would allow Dreamers to work and live in the U.S. and demand a vote on the floor of the House and Senate,” said FWD.us President Todd Schulte.

Senator Harris has a good heart but a terrible history education. She demonstrates this with a blanket statement that “we are a nation of immigrants”. An immigrant does not automatically emerge an American. We must not be a nation of immigrants. We must be a nation of Americans with a common belief handed to us by those who fought or died to unite us as a nation. A nation of immigrants will divide and separate into their own governmental models. Then we will have division and weakness. A nation ready to be conquered by a powerful enemy. History will repeat with a new lesson from American political carelessness.

I like your comment and support. Americans fought for our freedom but not for breaking federal law. How many dreamers will enlist and fight for America. That is a contribution to our great country. Harris is playing the field to bleeding heart supporters for the wrong reason.

Yes, we are a nation of immigrants LEGAL immigration.

Although these individuals were brought here as children and are not at fault, the parents of these kids knew fully well that they were illegally entering our country in violation of US law and therefore they have no civil rights and should not be allowed to remain.

It is not right or fair to allow these ILLEGAL immigrants to jump the line ahead of individuals who are going through the legal process, followed our laws, and are now waiting their turn to become residents of our US, legally!

As a military veteran, I am okay with giving special consideration to anyone started out as a illegal immigrant but served our Nation in military uniform and received an Honorable Discharge. To me this demonstrates their commitment to becoming a productive member of our society.

Every nation is a nation of immigrants …. they all came into each country from somewhere. Worldwide migrations have always been the mainstay of what eventually became a nation. If you read the history of countries, you can learn from where it’s inhabitants emerged…. and still do.

People who can’t separate LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigrants irritate the heck out of me. What part of illegal immigrant don’t they understand?
