Saturday: Prom for Special Needs Students, Parade and Concert in Downtown Brentwood

by ECT

On Saturday May 6, a special Prom for Our True Heroes, students with special needs, will be held at the Brentwood Community Center.

The event is being put on for special needs students at Freedom High, Heritage High, Liberty High Schools including the Gateway Program (students 18-22). The event was made possible due to community donations of more than $17,000 which allows for no cost for the students who wanted to attend.

As part of the event, students will be provided with a day of activities which includes haircuts for the boys, along with hair and makeup for the girls. Dresses and tuxedo’s were donated. The event will also feature flowers which were donated by Ribbons and Roses along with provided by Vic Stewart’s in Brentwood.

After the dinner, there will be a downtown parade based around the theme of superheroes in which the organizers hope the community will show support by showing up and cheering on the students.

Mitch Brouillette, a Brentwood Police Officer and School Resource Officer, chaired the committee to plan the event more than a year ago hopes the community will show support for the students by coming downtown and cheering students on.

“Come support our true hero prom 2017 for students with special needs and enjoy a concert in the park is local band the Breakfast Klub,” said Brouillette. “We have been planning the event for about a year and the thought process came about of how we can unite a community and how we could bring together the general education students with the students with special needs. The idea was to let’s not make it one school, let’s do it for the entire school district. It’s unique that all three high schools are coming together to support one event. We really wanted to unite the community to come together to support this event.”

Brouillette credited the community for all the help and dedication to making this event possible. In return, they are hosting a free concert at City Park by the Breakfast Klub, an 80’s tribute band, while the Prom is going on for parents and supports—the community is also invited.

“Its overwhelming how many people stepped up to help this event with over $17,000 was raised,” said Brouillette. “You can’t even put it into words, any person we spoke to about this event and when it was explained with the thought process, without hesitation the community stepped up wanting to be a part of it in some way.”

The committee consisted of Officer Mitch Brouillette, Jessica Banchieri (heritage HS), Summer Rodrigues (Liberty HS), Dana Johnston (Freedom HS), and Stephanie Yorgensen,
