Saturday: Picnic in the Park at the World of Discovery

by ECT

On January 14, 2012 , Oakley celebrated the ribbon cutting for the first all-abilities playground in East Contra Costa County. The playground continues to be a favorite spot where children of all ages play together side by side, regardless of their physical or developmental needs.

This Saturday, residents of East County and the Bay Area are invite you to bring your family to the 1st Annual “Picnic in the Park” at the World of Discovery between 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The idea of a picnic had been planned since the opening of the park.

“Several families in the community recommended to the City that there be an event every 6 months (or so) to draw families and people to the World of Discovery Playground where they would meet others in the community,” explained Janet Frazier.  “For this first event, we thought it would be nice for families to have an ‘old fashioned’ picnic lunch with their families where their children could play and the parents meet other parents.”

The children will have fun playing and making new friends at the World of Discovery playground, doing arts and crafts, face painting and other activities. The clown will amaze them with the ever popular balloon animals!

“Future events will have an educational theme such as science, reading or math.  Something to make it fun for the children while learning at the same time,” said Frazier.

The park had been designed with bright colored features to include muti-sensory and motor aspects of the play features to allow a place for special needs children to play beside their friends and family. Since the park has opened, Janet Frazier explained they have received so many different stories and enjoy watching the children smile and laugh.

Since the ribbon cutting, there has been a lot of positive feedback from families.

“The park has become a destination place where All Children can play side by side.  A place for families to meet each other and share resources to help in their child’s development,” said Frazier.

In the future, there are plans to work towards adding a wheelchair swing, fencing around the playground and restrooms.

You,  Me, We = Oakley and the City of Oakley are helping sponsor the event to help bring people from the community together.
