Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Repairs to Occur Week of February 18

by ECT

Contra Costa/Marin Counties –Due to forecasted rain this week, Caltrans’ contractor will begin the permanent repair work to replace the expansion joint on the I-580 Richmond-San Rafael Bridge during the week of February 18.

Work is planned overnight from 9:00 PM to 4:00AM with minimal impact to traffic expected. The expansion joint replacement project is planned for ten overnight work shifts. All work is anticipated to be completed within two weeks after the start date. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction.

This past Friday night, Caltrans engineers replaced the six-foot (6’) metal plate initially installed with an eight-foot (8’) metal plate. Caltrans completed the work by 1:00 AM Saturday morning with minimal impact to traffic. Drivers can expect a smoother ride over the expansion joint due to this adjustment.

“The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge remains safe and open to the public,” said Caltrans District 4 Director Tony Tavares. “Out of an abundance of caution, Caltrans engineers will continue to regularly monitor the bridge until the permanent repair is made.”
