The Richmond Police Department has identified Joshua Beaesley as the person responsible for an hour-long police chase in Antioch Wednesday night which began with a vehicle code violation at roughly 7:04 pm on G St. and Texas St.

According to Sergeant Nicole Abetkov, Patrol Division/Department PIO, Beesley, 40, of Antioch, was stopped for a vehicle code violation. During the stop, the detectives could see the driver was under the influence of an unknown substance.

As officers and the driver were speaking, in plain view within his reach were several different sharp edged weapons such as knives and razor blades.  For officer safety purposes, the detectives then asked the driver, solo occupant, to step out of the vehicle at which time he refused.

As the detectives were attempting to gain control of the driver’s door, the subject slammed open the door into one of the detectives striking him with the door. A struggle ensued and the driver then slammed on the gas and took off in the car. In the process, hitting one of the detectives with the side door mirror. The detective was not injured.

Richmond detectives then initiated the pursuit after the vehicle and a short time later the pursuit was taken over by CHP and Antioch PD.

According to Antioch Sergeant Morefield, speeds reached as high as 100 mph with spikes being deployed at several locations which flattened the suspects’ vehicle tires.  The chase ultimately came to an end at the 2900 block of Longview Road in Antioch.

This suspect was quickly apprehended a short distance away by the pursuing officers and a canine. Beesley was later sent to the Martinez Detention Facility for charges including Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer and Felony Evasion.

Note: To clear up why Richmond Police, FBI, California Dept. of Corrections and the District Attorney Investigators were involved in the pursuit was because earlier that evening, they were working with the Antioch Police Department to conduct a proactive enforcement detail in the city of Antioch. The operation targets high crime areas in the city. With the passage of Measure C, this unit will be more active once funding comes in during the springtime.
