Retired East Contra Costa Firefighter Loses Home in Paradise Fire, GoFundMe Established

by ECT

A 30-year firefighter who recently retired from the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District has lost his home in the Paradise Fire in Butte County.

In total, the fire has killed 29-people with 228 who are still unaccounted for, destroyed 6,700 structures and as of 7:45 am Monday, burned more than 113,000 acres which is just 25% contained.

A recently retired East Contra Costa Protection District firefighter, John Foster, served 30-years in East Contra Costa County, moved to Butte County in June and lost his home over the weekend.

A GoFundMe was launched to support them.

Our local Contra Costa County retired fire captain, John Foster served our community and retired after thirty years of service. John and his wife Patty ( retired postal worker) moved from Brentwood to Paradise a few months ago to enjoy their retirement and enjoy a slower pace life. The devastating ‘Camp Fire’ that is ripping through Northern California has destroyed John and Patty’s home.

They’ve lost everything. Their home, their belongings, clothes, everything in their storage, retirement memorabilia and much, much more. Barely making it out alive but lost everything material. Please please help them with any amount of donation.

Let’s give back to a family that gave so many of their years to our community. Please pray for Patty and John during this nightmare as they are in shock and disbelief.

John, has been near and dear to my family as he was the fireman on call who helped my son 20 years ago, during a severe asthma attack. When we visited the fire house when my 2 year old (then) was released from the hospital, to thank the fireman on the call and John, always humble, made my son feel like the hero.

I was forever thankful to John and stayed in touch over the years, visiting with my son at the fire house. I want to be able to help repay the support he gave my family in our time of need. The Fosters had no insurance on their home in Paradise yet and any money raised will go to house them and try to rebuild a life that has been shattered.

I don’t mean to sound heartless because I am not and I can dig helping others but just curious…didn’t they have insurance.

It’s getting very hard to get insurance in certain regions.

I was taught the minute you contract to put a stick in the ground you get fire insurance. I am sorry for this familybut a fireman with out insurance is unreal.

A friend of mine lives (lived) in Paradise, and so does her brother, elderly parents, two out of three of her daughters, her grandchildren, ex-husband, etc. They ALL had fire insurance (several different homes) because they were willing to pay for it. A good analogy would be earthquake insurance in CA. You’ll pay more, but insurance companies will cover you. If you’re willing to spend the money.

Some insurance companies are literally canceling homeowners policies because of where they live. A friend of mine who has paid insurance on time and at a premium for dozens of years had their policy canceled with just 30 days notice just because they live in Tahoe. Never had a claim and lives along the shore area. Not sure if they have been able to get anyone to insure them since. I am sure they will have to pay double to probably quadruple to get coverage again. I bet a lot of folks who lost everything in the camp fire either had their policies canceled too, prior to the fire and because of the fires this and last year, or will never be able to get insurance again in the same place. Everyone should make sure they have enough coverage and read the small print.

I feel bad for this family as well, but no fire insurance for a fireman (especially) is unreal. It’s not that it’s hard to get – people are trying to save money. Until they need insurance, and they don’t have any. Kudos to those who are willing to help financially.
