Ironhouse Sanitary District (ISD) will be celebrating the re-grand opening of its Residential Recycled Water Fill Station on Saturday, June 10 with a hot dog barbecue from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Fill Station hosted a soft opening this week to get ready for the summer. The Fill Station will still be open Monday, June 5 and Wednesday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Despite the 40 days of rain this winter in Northern California, lawns and gardens in Oakley’s sandy soil are already dry and looking for daily soaks to keep plants and trees green and thriving throughout the hot summer and early fall seasons. ISD has a helpful solution to reducing potable water use. The District’s recycled water is available to all Oakley and Bethel Island residents for free. All that is required is coming to our facility to pick it up.
For those who have not taken advantage of using recycled water for irrigation it doesn’t take much to get started. ISD’s recycled water is safe for nearly all of your outside watering needs including vegetable gardens, fruit trees and even washing cars.
Many people believe that a 300-gallon tank, seen on the back of many local pick-up trucks over the past couple of years, is necessary to get recycled water. Many different types of containers can be used to bring recycled water home from ISD’s Recycled Water Fill Station. Some residents have gone as far as to bringing gallon containers, covered five gallon buckets and even 30 gallon drums. All which can be purchased at local hardware stores.
A pick-up truck isn’t even necessary for bringing recycled water home. Many users drive their cars in and fill up their containers right out of their trunks. ISD allows users to bring home anywhere from one gallon to 300 gallons a trip and make as many trips as they’d like during Fill Station open hours.
Recycled Water can be used to water lawns, trees, gardens and flowers. Some are even using the water to clean their vehicles and patios. The free service is available to Oakley and Bethel Island residents however outside residents can also get ISD’s recycled water by purchasing a $25 punch card which allows for 25 trips of up to 300 gallons of recycled water.
New sign-ups are taken at the fill station each day. Please bring a driver’s license or California ID with your current address on it to the fill station to sign up. There is a quick training session before bringing recycled water home.
ISD’s Residential Recycled Water Fill Station is located at 450 Walnut Meadows Drive just past downtown Oakley. Cross streets are Rose Avenue, Main Street and Districts Way. Opening hours are Monday and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
