Pittsburg Police Provide Update on Hoka, Puppy Who Was Scalped

by ECT

On Friday, the Pittsburg Police Department provided an update on Hoka, a puppy that was scalped from ear to ear.

Hoka was brought into a Pittsburg clinic after someone “saw him walking down the street”. Hoka is 3-5 days old and 12.7 ounces in weight.

According to Pittsburg Police, Captain Jane De May Andreottii of Contra Costa Animal Services stated the following update:

  • Hoka was dropped off by a Good Samaritan whose phone number was incorrectly documented, making follow up near impossible.
  • The Good Samaritan put forth a concerted effort to make Hoka as comfortable as possible by providing a warm towel and taking the time to dry him off.
  • Hoka could have indeed been found wandering in the rain. Per medical staff at the clinic that would not be uncommon in the general area where they are located.
  • Hoka’s injuries were consistent with that of an accident as the wound was a jagged tear as opposed to a knife/blade cut.
  • The attending veterinarian found no physical evidence to suggest this was an intentional act, rather, evidence suggests it was an accident of some sort, as if Hoka was stuck in a precarious situation.
  • Currently, Hoka is being fostered by a Registered Vet Tech from the attending clinic and is as stable as can be expected at this time, though “not out of the woods”.
  • The attending veterinarian continues to provide Hoka with veterinary care and is closely monitoring his progress. It is too early to determine the exact extent of Hoka’s injuries or his need for future care.

Pittsburg Police Department is reaching out to the community on behalf of Fido Alert – East Contra Costa County, Umbrella of Hope and Contra Costa Animal Services. They are asking for assistance in determining what happened to Hoka.

They say the road ahead is long and an expensive one.

Meanwhile, Fido Alert – East Contra Costa County is offering a $500 reward for any information in this case.

Police say it is unknown at this time if this was a case of animal abuse, a home ear crop gone bad, an animal attack or a tragic accident. Unfortunately the person who brought Hoka into the clinic provided an invalid phone number.

CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES is investigating and will follow up on any legitimate leads regarding Hoka’s condition.

If you have any information regarding Hoka, his littermates, his breed mix or that of his parents, please email Umbrella of Hope at [email protected] or contact Sgt. Williams-Cain at Contra Costa Animal Services at 608-8400 and reference Hoka’s animal number A875389.
