Pittsburg Police Officer Robert Myers received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Hero Award in honor of his contribution to MADD’s mission which Is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking.

Last year, Officer Myers made 35 DUI arrest in winning the award for the third year in a row as he primary works the night shift from Friday to Sunday.

“It’s a pretty big honor and it’s nice they show recognition because it’s a lot of work that goes into a DUI arrest. There is a lot of extra hours and a lot of paperwork so it’s nice to be recognized. It’s one of the things that is worth it even if you don’t get recognition because every DUI arrest you make you do keep the streets and the city safer,” said Myers.

As a way to say thank you, they host a lunch every year where a person who has been effective comes in and speaks. Myers shared that is when you really know what you are doing makes the impact.

“Every year when they do the lunch just to say thank you, you have someone who comes in and speaks on a DUI related accident, generally they are pretty serious where they have a long-term injury and say thank you. They go around and shake everyone’s hand and say thank you and let everyone know what you are doing is worthwhile and helping people out and arresting somebody who could prevent the same injury to anyone in the city,” said Myers.

Myers admitted that most of the time he catches someone on a DUI violation through unrelated causes such as headlight or taillight out, running a red light or other minor traffic violations.

“When I go up and speak to the driver and ask the standard information such as driver’s license and registration, it’s pretty easy to recognize the symptoms. Generally what I notice first is the smell; whiskey sticks out most to me because it’s easy to smell. A lot of times there speech is a giveaway or they won’t look at you. Look for the simple things,” explained Myers. “It’s not really hard to put it together after asking some more questions. If there is enough signs I will ask them to go through the field sobriety test so then once you start doing that you know what you are looking at.”

Myers added that he loves working in the City of Pittsburg and that it’s all about being proactive as much as possible to keeping the community safe.
