by ECT

The California Highway Patrol announced Monday that a 43-year-old man who had been walking along the right roadway edge of Kirker Pass Road, north of Nortonville Road, was hit by a vehicle and died.

CHP said for yet to be determined reasons, Rodney Lee Ross, 43 of Antioch, ventured out into the travel lane directly in the path of a 2012 Toyota Camry. The 36 year old driver from Pittsburg had been driving the Camery northbound on Kirker Pass Road at this location, when she saw the pedestrian step out in front of her car. She indicated she made a hard brake application; however, the front right of the Toyota collided with the pedestrian.

The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision. The driver of the Camry stayed at the scene and was fully cooperative with CHP officials.

Preliminary, intoxication does not appear to be a factor in this collision. This incident is still pending further investigation.
