Pittsburg: Big Rig into Building Kills Driver, Results in Two-Alarm Fire

by ECT

At 8:24 am Monday, Contra Costa County Firefighters responded to a report of a big rig into a strip mall on Railroad Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters located a big rig into a building with an explosion and two units involved in a fire.

Pittsburg police notified the public that Railroad Avenue near Linscheid Drive closed due to Collision. This area should be avoided, please use Harbor Street or Loveridge Road for north and southbound traffic.

At 8:39 am, a second alarm response was requested.

According to Pittsburg Police Captain Ron Raman, the semi-truck collided with two vehicles at a stop light before crashing into the building on Railroad Avenue.  The collision caused an explosion which led to a major fire and black smoke.

“Once the fire department was able to render the area safe, emergency personnel entered the cab area of the truck and located the driver who was deceased,” said Raman. “The occupants of the other two vehicles had minimal to no injuries and the building was not occupied at the time of the collision.”

Police expect Railroad Avenue to be closed for most of the day as traffic investigators reconstruct this collision.  Harbor Street and Loveridge Road should be used for north and southbound traffic at this point.   This semi-truck is used for hauling dirt and gravel and there is no hazardous material risk.

Information on the trucking company and the deceased driver is not being released at this point until appropriate notifications are made.

That’s a Mexican Food Restaurant not a gas station.

This is crazy. Its likely a mechanical problem with the breaks. Thankfully this happened when the businesses were closed.

Prayers for the drivers family. The choice he made to go into that bldg instead of staying on the road could have saved many lives. RIP
