PG&E Urges Customers to Play Safe Memorial Day Weekend

by ECT

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and many will kick it off with fun in the sun including barbecues, boating, swimming, camping and more. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) urges customers to use caution over the holiday – and all summer long – when dealing with the heat.

Whether you’re having a pool party, hitting the road, firing up the grill, or simply staying indoors to stay cool, it is important to be prepared, have a plan for dealing with the heat and above all else: stay safe.

PG&E offers the following tips to play safe on Memorial Day weekend:

  • “Look Up and Live!” – Pay attention to overhead power lines when using ladders and long-handed tools like long, aluminum poles to clean your pool. Watch where the other end of the pole is located in relation to power lines.
  • Replace damaged electrical cords and equipment, or have them repaired by a qualified electrician or repair center to avoid the risk of electrical shock.
  • Never attempt to retrieve any type of balloon, kite, drone or toy that becomes caught in a power line. Leave it alone and immediately call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 to report it.

With a number of beaches and lakes in its service area, PG&E encourages the public to take appropriate safety precautions when recreating in and near water:

  • Obey all warning signs and restrictive buoys while swimming or boating.
  • Use the Buddy System. Never fish, swim, boat or raft alone.
  • Don’t dive or jump into unfamiliar water. Shallow water or submerged trees or rocks could cause serious injury.
  • Recreating in PG&E canals and flumes is strictly prohibited. Stay out of these water conveyances, which are very dangerous due to slippery sides and fast moving water.
