At roughly 6:46 pm Monday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews responded to a vegetation fire on Machado Lane in Oakley which burned two acres including multiple PVC pipe piles and vehicles.

Engine 93 was first on scene to arrive the fire and requested backup from Engine 54 (downtown Brentwood) and 94 (Knightsen). In total 13 fire personnel were on scene.

Fire crews were on scene of the blaze for 2-hours and 18-minutes. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damages.

According to radio traffic, Battalion 5 requested the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office to the scene as they reportedly had the responsible person held. The probable cause of the blaze was a subject using a chop saw to remove a trailers axle.

Notes:
As crews were an 30-minutes into the fire attack, Engine 94 was released for a medical call on Dutch Slough Rd. in Oakley (5:22pm) which nearly required a helicopter—it was later cancelled. Meanwhile, Engine 54, also on the vegetation fire, was requested for a medical call on Holland Tract (5:29pm).

With a properly staffed fire district this damage would have been greatly reduced. When things like this happen it’s a reminder to the taxpayers/ voters of this area who have refused to properly support public safety. The reality is, scenes like this-and worse will continue to happen due to the negligence of the constituents who are served by these hard working people to protect their lives and property. Get ready for a long and disastrous summer people……and remember, when things like this happen (and they will quite often) look no further than yourselves to lay blame.

Disagree because they had three engines on this fire. How many more did they need? It was not residential? Stuff burns in grass, put 10 engines on it and still would have caused the damages. At this particular location how come Engine 93 was dispatched first and not Knightsen? Makes me wonder if they really do want stuff to burn to prove a point.

Want it to burn to prove a point? That is flat out ridiculous Voter925!!!! When these guys put on that uniform, they only know GO GO GO GO and give 100%. The other stuff occurs after their shift or off duty. These guys have a switch on them and I really cannot explain it but they just do.

Do you second guess your doctor too? How ’bout your lawyer? I guess when it comes to the fire-dept, everyone and their brother thinks they are experts. Give me a break!!!!! According to your way of thinking emergencies, fires, and the like only happen in a perfect sequential order. Heaven help us if multiple fires happen in east co. at the same time. Oh, I see you didn’t think of that. Bummer. I’m sure the f.d. appreciates your level of expertise.

Bad example, lots of people second guess doctors. While I don’t wonder, and agree with Burk, they only know one speed, I can see what V925 is trying lamely to imply, that maybe it isn’t as bad as Vince Stated. The cry of skys falling have been going on since the tax measure failed, and response times have crept up, but not to the levels some said would happen back then.
Of course.. when you dance with the devil, eventually you’re going to get burned.

What was stated back then was based on a 3 station model. That is a few weeks out yet. Due to the staffing drain you won’t have to wait until November to see the consequences. We could be dropped to 4 stations in 30 days and to 3 stations within 60 if the hiring goes as some expect. You’re going to get a nice dose of nobody home in the heart of fire season.

I hope people will remember the names of those who misled them into this disaster with the anti-tax rhetoric and outright lies. They called it fear mongering. They insisted the County could and would step in and save it.

A lot of people said the same thing about Doctor’s Hospital in San Pablo……….

Last one out turn out the lights.

Righteous in the wood,

It was a great example and you proved my point with the “lots of people” line as your qualifier. When you only see one component of the issue I understand why you remain confused. Sadly, I read the same one dimensional replies in many of your posts. It’s nothing personal.

Have a nice dance.

Don’t feel bad for the dude, if he gave a rats ass about his stuff he would have had the grass cleared.

E93 was there first because it was closer. If 93 can beat 94 to Knightsen ave, then certainly it will be faster to this address. To accuse firefighters in delaying is really low. There is so much ground to cover in this district. The closest resources were called and they were in station at time of dispatch. When it was determined that more were needed they were called. Simple as that.

You think Engine 93 beats 94 to Knightsen Ave??? Really?? Not a chance if they both are dispatched from their stations. On runs to the island, 93 is usually couple of minutes behind 94.

Beyond low…

I’m not trying to argue with you. But with all do respect, we drive the engines. Most of the time when both 93 and 94 are in quarters It’s a tie to Knightsen ave. 94 then needs to stop at intersection and 93 rolls by. The point I’m trying to make is that the current location of 94 is not ideal. And it is a fact that it is no faster to the island. What is of critical benefit though is the three personnel that are staffed there. They are available 24/7 to assist throughout the district.

Barbara DuMont May 14, 2014 - 1:55 pm

Gee I am sorry. With 94 driving 1.48 miles in a straight shot down Knightsen Ave. and 93 having to drive 2.7 miles through 5 signal controlled intersection, 1 being a very busy main road, 1 stop sign, I would have thought 94 would beat 93. You’re right, lets not argue its not worth it.

Chuck May 15, 2014 - 6:03 pm

Maybe the guys at 94 are not as fast as the guys at 93 in getting ready to roll. Muster time. 2.7 mi. faster than 1.48 mi. Someone needs a red bull.

Better off. May 15, 2014 - 5:40 am

It’s not not a straight shot. 94 must make several zig- zags out of station. Then slow down to fifteen mph over train tracks, and then watch multiple small cross streets. Then it comes to complete stop at Knightsen ave. In the future someday they need to relocate the station to east cypress.

For why May 15, 2014 - 4:49 pm

Geez people, I can run faster than you.nanana. That isn’t the issue here is it?
Wow.

For why May 15, 2014 - 4:52 pm

The blame for this mess belongs to the owner. Just look at the pictures.

What’s the excuse this time at this address. Is it just a coincidence?
