Oakley Police Say Youths Approached by Suspicious Vehicle, Unclear if Crime Occurred

by ECT

On Monday, the City of Oakley confirmed that two child were approached by a suspicious vehicle at Oakley Elementary School during East County Little League Baseball games were being played.

Although East County Little League says this was an attempted kidnapping, Oakley Police say they have not yet determined if a crime was committed.

Inquiries about the incident were not returned until Monday, police released the following statement:

On Saturday May 20th at about 10:45 am Oakley Officers responded to a suspicious circumstance call at the Oakley Elementary School. An 11 year old boy reported he was playing on the playground with his younger sister.

A vehicle pulled into the parking lot, some distance away from the boy. The driver reportedly asked the boy to get in his car. The boy took his younger sister and walked towards adults who were at the park for morning baseball games.

The stranger left in his vehicle.

Oakley Officers have developed a potential identity of the adult driver of the vehicle. We are working to determine exactly what occurred. Currently, we have not established that a crime occurred or the intent of the adult. This case does however highlight the need for teaching our youngsters to be vigilant, aware of their surroundings, and if they ever feel uncomfortable, to turn to a trusted adult. We’d like to thank those adults who assisted this child on Saturday.

We will update the community if more information becomes available.

According to East County Little League, they are calling it an abduction attempt after posting the following messages to social media:

May 20 at 11:11 am
ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING OF 11 Y/O AT OAKLEY ELEMENTARY PLAYGROUND. Police have been notified, and are looking for the suspect. We wanted to make our families aware of the situation to keep your children supervised and safe.

They followed up by stating:

It was a Hispanic male, with gold front teeth (other teeth also missing), shoulder length dark hair, wearing a white and black t-shirt with a marijuana logo on it. He’s driving a brown older sedan (possibly a BMW) missing a front bumper (with possible fire damage to the front of the vehicle). If you see this vehicle or person fitting this description, please call the PD right away. We were unable to obtain a license plate number, so if you are able to get one for the PD it would be extremely helpful.

Check back for updates.

Good job East County Little League in getting this information out. It’s a shame Oakley Police seem to be confused on whether or not a crime was committed.
