Via Oakley Police:

In late August a person using the social media program Snapchat began sending threatening messages to a group of female students at Freedom High School.

The same account holder then began to distribute more threatening messages first to a group of other students and then progressed to making threats to the entire campus and school staff. The threats made by the subject significantly impacted the school and the Oakley community.

As a part of their investigation, Oakley Police Department (OPD) Investigators were assisted by detectives from the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the State Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Once the threat to the campus was received, agents from the DA’s Office and the FBI provided significant assistance – providing direct assistance to our department, while many of our officers were assigned to increased security duties at the school campus.

Throughout the time of this investigation, members of our community were terrorized by this subject and the threats that he made to our community. Because of the threats, some members of the community have suffered significant psychological trauma, wondering if the subject would follow through on his statements. School attendance at all of our campuses were impacted and disrupted by the actions of this individual.

Earlier Tuesday, investigators from the Contra Costa County DA’s office and the OPD traveled to Austin, Texas to serve a series of warrants related to this investigation. Assisted by the Austin Police Department, TRISTAN AMIR CURL, 19 years old from Oakley, was taken into custody on making a series of terrorist threats. CURL was attending a University in Texas at the time of his arrest. CURL was booked on the California arrest warrant and will now be processed for extradition back to California.

Investigators recovered a significant amount of evidence that links CURL to all of the threats that were made in the community.

Our investigators will be returning to Contra Costa County to prepare to file their case for review by the Contra Costa DA’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office. OPD Officers will return to escort CURL back to Contra Costa County once his extradition has been approved through the courts.

“We want to thank the staff and families of the School District for their patience during this investigation. It has taken long hours of work by our detectives, and the members of all the allied agencies that assisted us in this case. The DA’s Office and the FBI were fully involved in all aspects of this investigation all the way to the arrest. The Austin Police Department immediately responded to assist our investigators and we are indebted to them for their assistance. There are still additional questions that we are trying to understand, including the motivation for the threats and if he intended to carry out any of his threats,” said OPD Police Chief Chris Thorsen.

Anyone with additional information about CURL or this investigation is asked to contact our OPD Tip Line at [email protected].

I bet the parents protesting outside Freedom feel extremely stupid. There is a reason why police do not release info ahead of an arrest, they want to catch the bad guy. I understand safety is a priority but keeping them home everyday is a little over the top based on social media posts
