The Oakley Police Department is continuing to investigate Wednesday night’s shooting incident involving an 11-year-old boy.
Investigators say the shooting does not appear to be an accident, and that the boy was killed as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Coroner’s Division has identified the boy as Anthony Garcia. An autopsy was conducted this morning. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wound.
On Wednesday, at about 7:06 PM, Oakley Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting on the 1300 block of Yosemite Circle in Oakley.
Officers arrived to find Garcia suffering from a gunshot wound. The fire department later pronounced him deceased.
There is no media availability and there will be no further updates on this incident.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Anthony’s family. Having recently experienced a similar loss, I can very well identify with all the emotions involved. I highly recommend http://www.griefshare.org to help get you through it. There is much counseling available. Please reach out to the supports in our community
I should not have to repeat this…
Lock you guns up when not using them! Its not rocket science!
Locking your guns up keeps kids from getting to them, and prevents illegally obtained guns on the street!
Testing2, true about gun locks, keeping illegal guns off the streets, not so much. This isn’t about guns or gun control. It is a sad sad story of a young man, no longer with us. Let us not forget those left behind, who now have to deal with this emotionally. It is a horrible thing that has happened, let us all say prayers for his family.
Leslie, great idea and support with the link.
You right its not about gun control. Its about gun owners being responsible and locking their guns up when not in use. Otherwise unsupervised kids shoot themselves and criminals steal them (aka on the streets illegally!).
I don’t know where this 11 year old boy obtained the firearm but I know this, it was not responsibly locked up!
It is tragic that this happened, but more tragic if no one learns from it!
Testing2, i agree with you. Its the responsibility of the parents to have fire arms LOCKED & STOWED away properly…like every gun owner SHOULD do!
I don’t believe they said he used a family gun. This is a tragedy. Prayers to his family and RIP Anthony.
Wow this is so devastating. My thoughts and prayers to the family.
Where are the parents in this ? Just eleven years old. Very sad and tragic.
We shouldn’t judge. Do we know for sure how the child got the gun. An 11 yr can get one off the street these days. Besides that I believe the parents will already harshly have to deal with the mistake on their own if it was their gun. Untunanatly people are running out buying guns without any knowledge about safety. I would feel safer in Montana where its legal to carry your firearm because people respect them their guns. Californians are to laid back about important standards. RIP Anthony
Please dont label Californians as laid back on gun safety. Just because its legal in MT to carry doesnt mean they arent “laid back” either!
Guns kill. As long as there are guns people will be killed. Keep them locked and in a safe. May God bless you at this time and know we are never given more than we can bear. God bless! Know that you are loved.
Susan, guns kill? Please send us all a video of a gun killing someone by itself. That would be an incredible thing to see. And no cheating, you can’t hire a ghost to hold it for you.
Knives kill. As long as there are knives people will be killed. Keep them locked and in a safe. May God bless you at this time and know we are never given more than we can bear. God bless! Know that you are loved.
My condolences to family. RIP Anthony. Heaven has gained an Angel.
