At roughly 2:17 pm, emergency crews responded to E. Cypress Road and west of Bethel Island Road in Oakley where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. The 18-year-old male subject sustained major head injuries and was flown to John Muir Medical Hospital.

Crews had to shut down a portion of E. Cypress Road as crews worked and they had to land a helicopter.

The incident is under investigation by Oakley Police and no further information was provided.

Although the incident is being labeled a pedestrian versus vehilce, according to ECT readers who were on scene, the subject hit was riding a skateboard and on his phone. He apparently swerved into the road and was stuck by the vehicle.

I was there and personally pulled his phone from his pocket to try and identify him. I did not watch the vehicle strike him but there is no way his phone would have ended up back in his pocket after the collision

I am his Aunt too. We are very close. Please call me as he may need you as a witness. 209-830-4470.

Do you often disturb potential evidence at collision scenes? Why not leave identifying the injured to the people responsible for his care at the time, you know fire fighters paramedics, police. Going through someones pockets so you can identify them is opening yourself up to suspicion, “Gee officer that lady over there was going through his pockets after the crash, you may want to talk to her she may have stolen his money”.
Yeah render whatever first aid comfort you can, but there is no need for anyone not in a position of authority to be going through his pockets to ID him.

The intention was to call his mother while waiting for emergency personnel.

Ignore the fool Melissa!

Melissa May 2, 2014 - 2:22 pm

It is upsetting that you would imply that I would steal any of his items. I think its easy to say what you would do is best but when I was sitting with this young man in obvious pain all I could think about is my children and how I would feel if it was them. I was hoping his phone would have a number for home or mom.

p5ret May 2, 2014 - 5:04 pm

It was not my implication that you would steal, it is however the way someone may see it. As for calling his mother or other relative, do you think it is wise to add a parents concern to a scene such as this? Having investigated a great many collisions including 5 fatal auto ped’s I can speak from experience that having hysterical parents or family members there is not a good thing to have to deal with.

While your advise is prudent and wise, your delivery is less than stellar. She was doing what I’m sure many would do, in that situation, and not having the benefit of LE or other first responder training. So while we can all learn from what you are trying to convey, most will merely see you as a sanctimonious, heartless prick bent on making a clearly good person feel bad.

p5ret May 2, 2014 - 5:06 pm

Talk about bad delivery, call someone a heartless prick for conveying a message of what could happen and I have seen happen. Get off your high horse and quit trying to be so righteous.

Righteous in the 'Wood May 3, 2014 - 1:28 pm

Stick with that, I’m sure all zero of your friends agree with you. Only high horse I’m on currently is the one I knocked you off of. Now, go off with that award winning personality of yours and leave these people to more positive notes of hope.

Righteous in the ‘Wood,

Here you are arguing again. Big fricken surprise. This time it is with someone that knows law enforcement. A retired cop maybe (just guessing). But here you are, a self appointed resident expert on everything and yet nothing at all. What a joke.

Survey says; Ding-Ding-Ding….YOU are the problem.

Geeeeesh, figure it out buddy! It’s YOU that lacks tact, common sense, judgment and the ability to understand right from wrong.

Do us all a favor….

Please don’t breed.

Teresa Gonzales May 2, 2014 - 7:33 pm

Yes, thank you Righteous. I couldn’t have said it better myself. As his Aunt, I am glad she did!

ECV big bro you’ve been guessing your entire life. If I wrote Einstein4, you probably think I was scientist. I m sure after they investigate the answers will be available instead of your knew jerk method. I hope this kid is alright fault or not.

Melissa. Please contact me at 209-830-4470 asap. He may need you as a witness if that is what they are reporting.

It really does not matter if he was on his cell phone or not, he was in the roadway as a pedestrian.

Righteous in the 'Wood May 2, 2014 - 3:41 pm

Might have been along the edge, where he is allowed, one persons “swerve” is another persons straight line. Hard to say, once you’re hit by 3000 lbs of moving steel, you’ll end up where physics takes you, and unless credible witnesses can verify the drivers story, who’s to say what the truth is.

21956. (a) No pedestrian may walk upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district otherwise than close to his or her left-hand edge of the roadway.

(b) A pedestrian may walk close to his or her right-hand edge of the roadway if a crosswalk or other means of safely crossing the roadway is not available or if existing traffic or other conditions would compromise the safety of a pedestrian attempting to cross the road.

Either way, the kid was hit and that is tragic. In the long run, in places where you are likely to encounter people on bikes, skateboards, scooters, trikes, red rider wagons, walking, running, skipping and otherwise moving about like young people do in neighborhoods, drivers have to be vigilant to the possibilities of striking someone near or even swerving into the roadway. While it may annoy people to have to watch for these encumbrances of the roadways, we still have an obligation to be aware of the reality, and avoid these kind of accidents.

I hope the boy heals up well, and I hope we all slow down, and watch out for our neighbors.

Sean May 2, 2014 - 3:24 pm

I saw the entire scenario, and already had given the police the statement…I have a son his age who skates, so when your nephew went passed me as I was putting out the garbage cans, he was 100% texting and had both ear buds in phone or iPod…he looked back three or four times for cars! when he started on the rise of the road, his head was totally down looking at device! I started yelling no!no no! and he veered out into the middle! head still down and boom he got hit…. I am sorry but it was all on him, no way driver could have done anything… My heart was racing because that’s my son, he rides his board oblivious… Long boards are dangerous as the give the illusion that you are always straight…. I hope he pulled through, he certainly didn’t need this to happen.

Praying for Cody, he was a sweet boy and this is a terrible accident. I’m sure all involved feel terrible and to place blame is never the answer. I hope he recovers, This is so sad for all involved. Please don’t post here if you are a hater. Yes a young man was injured but his family can see this and they don’t need your negativity at this time.

Teresa Gonzales May 2, 2014 - 7:51 pm

Thank you Tina!

I’m betting you don’t know the area of East Cypress where this occurred. There is no paved edge of the roadway that is safe, for pedestrian’s, bike riders or anyone else. Several people have seen him riding in the center of the lanes, clearly not a safe place to be with a speed limit of 50 MPH.
This is a tragic incident, but one that was 100% preventable. The city has some liability here as well. Since the expansion of housing into the area was done with no safety improvements to the only roadway leading to the new homes. Pedestrian traffic has increased due to the development of Summer Lakes area over the last several years at all hours of the day and night. No attempt has been made by the city since annexation to build the new road, or improve/repair the existing roadway. Bottom line is everyone has to pay attention on the road. Some people believe that just because they are a pedestrian they have the right or way, and that is simply not true. A pedestrian has a duty to not attempt to cross a road or enter into a roadway if there are vehicle close enough to cause a hazard. All it takes is a bit of driving around to see that look both ways before you cross the street is a long gone ideal.

Righteous in the 'Wood May 3, 2014 - 1:35 pm

Most of us don’t need to bet on this, we all know it: you’re a know it all DB bent on putting up your self-proclaimed vast reservoir of superior knowledge and intellect on display for all to see… problem is, no one cares what you say.
Are you honestly implying that all of that adds up to the drivers out here in East County being unable to see a skateboarder in the road where there are no sidewalks, and they can’t slow down until it is safe to pass?????
Please, with that kind of logic, it’s no wonder we now have a law on the books for cyclists that require vehicles to maintain a 3ft buffer from them while passing. Same should hold true for any pedestrian as well.
Here’s a thought, why don’t you just recommend that everyone give themselves ample time to get where they’re going, and slow the phuhq down? How’s that for a solution?

In the world today, it is just nice to know that there are still people that have a heart enough to even think to stop to help. So many people would just drive by, because they do not want to be involved. No matter the help- making a phone call, holding a hand or comforting a family member that was there. We see so often how horrible people are, but as soon as someone trys to do something good- they are criticized. We all know what a wonderful job our emergency services do, but sometimes it is nice to know that there are other people out there with a giving heart. So happy to hear that he is well and at home where he belongs.
