On Sunday, a single-alarm fire destroyed a home in the 4700 block of La Vista Drive off Holly Drive in Oakley after a propane tank explosion.

The fire broke out around 1:30 pm and a giant cloud of smoke shot up into the air with reports of smoke coming from as far away as Rio Vista.

All three of East Contra Costa Fire Protection District engines were used on the blaze along with two engines from Contra Costa County Fire to assist on the call for a total of 17-firefighters plus two battalion chiefs and the fire chief.

IMG_2530Upon arrival, a defensive fire operation was established to protect neighboring homes from exposure after crews observed the home was under heavy fire throughout the ground floor and up into the attic.

Firefighters were prevented from going to the roof due to safety the structure was unstable.

The home was deemed a complete loss by fire officials after the fire started from a malfunction of a propane cylinder in the backyard which resulted in an exterior fire which quickly spread to the interior of the home.

Oakley Police responded to the call for traffic control while AMR also responded as a precaution.

No one was injured in the fire, however, the family did lose its dog and cat to the fire.

A GoFundMe Account has been set up to assist the family. To donate, click here.

There once was a time, when Fire department was all volunteer, they prided themselves in saving a house. Not that they are all paid, seems that all they can do is, for the most part, watch in burn, for (safety reasons)Volunteers must have been expendable.
