Oakley Hands Out Expired Coupons During Fishing Derby Event

by ECT

The City of Oakley hosted their Annual Kids Fishing Derby event over the weekend where attendees who were provided with local coupons. Attendees got a surprise when they looked at them and saw they were expired.

The following photographs blow were provided by a reader. According to the reader, she called both establishments and was told “maybe” they will honor them.

Whether its lack of oversight which has become a common theme in Oakley or simply an honest mistake, this is embarrassing for the City of Oakley during an event. We would hope the City of Oakley is proactive enough to offer an exchange of expired coupons for valid coupons.

Thanks, I just checked mine and I see they are expired. Guess I’ll throw them in the garbage. Sad that the City of Oakley can’t even get coupons right, now I can see why Main Street has been a mess.

Well, it’s the thought that counts.

Clearly “detail oriented” is not in the job descriptions issued by Oakley. LOL

But sympathy to the kids which is what this event is supposed to be all about. A smart PR person at either of these businesses would honor the coupons. “Maybe” is a blown opportunity.

FAIL all around on this one.

i am sure if you called Delta Bowl they would honor them. They are really great about that. Don’t throw them away until you ask.

Is the same employee that reviewed Main Street plans now working in Parks and Recreation?

aesopredux Aug 19, 2013 - 12:09 pm

Oakley should just use “Common Core” math and explain every single step they took in determining that 2011 and 2012 are greater than 2013. That’ll fix everything. Heck It’s good enough for our kids now, right??

Why am I not surprised! Typical.

Perfect example of why I moved out of Oakley.

This city seems to make mistakes by the day. Is this minor? Yes! But its add up if they continue to keep doing it time after time and it gives the city a bad name. How these staff people still have jobs is crazy to me with a city council who doesn’t seem to care or provide any direction other than “oh well”.

Remember the PG&E Neroly road issue that was poor, you also had the Neroly road/empire lighting issue. Downtown is laughable which resulted in a business suing the city. Fountain issue. Carpaccios and the Cup Cake Shop Loans, You have business not paying their rent, HALO being booted from the fire house, Montgomerygate with that mortgage deal.

Lets not forget, this is all occurring and the city council approved raises! The city staff should be getting salary reductions. If I am on the City Council I would donate my salary back for the fact I’d be embarrassed at my city staff.

Is anyone else wondering why the City of Oakley is giving out coupons from a business in the City of Antioch? Must have been a previous employer of one of the city staff!

Laura Aug 19, 2013 - 9:19 pm

Our city council is SAD!!!! What have they done NOTHING We need to clear them all out.Start fresh.

Cleaning house at the city might be a good start.

InTheKnow Aug 19, 2013 - 9:33 pm

What happened to Oakley First? The City who claims to be all about Oakley business “first” giving out coupons to outside Oakley and shop elsewhere.

I work at delta bowl and we did not give expired passes out. I am incharge of giving donantions. We will honor them with no problem just let the staff know where you got them. Not sure where those old ones came from but we will take care of any that come in. Thanks Cindy Smith

Here it is days later. WHY have we not heard an apology or plan to take care of this by the city. Beneath Mr. Montgomery?

Mike Burkholder, ace reporter, should have checked his facts before he posted this article! The City of Oakley didn’t even make these goody bags, another group did! I know it’s fun for some to be a negative Nancy, but it seems reporting on the truth, lies by the wayside in so many articles these days. I think it’s nice they are not pointing fingers but trying to fix someone else’s mistake. Thanks City of Oakley!

Mary, you might want to check you opinion before you post. You are only making things worse by attacking the messenger.

I will continue to trust “negative Nancy” over “Mistaken Mary” any day (you continue to be the latter).

Mr. Burkeholder/East County Today is holding his own. I believe that is why so many people are participating in these forums. It’s a great place to read up to the minute news that frankly cannot be found anywhere else in these parts.

from Oakley’s City Hall Facebook page:

We apologize for the misunderstanding at the Oakley Kids Fishing Derby. There were a number of organizations and individuals who volunteered their time and resources to provide this free event to nearly 120 participating children. Although City staff assisted a well meaning volunteer group in distributing goodie bags, these bags were not provided by the City. We understand the confusion and will provide replacement goodie bags to those who would like to return the original goodie bags to the Recreation Division Office located at 3231 Main Street.

Ms. Romick, with all due respect, this was an Oakley event which the City even states on its website:

“The City of Oakley and Hook, Line & Sinker host this annual event to give children an opportunity for a free day of fishing”

Whether or not the city made them or not is not the issue, they still were handed out during an Oakley event which was promoted as “OAKLEY FISHING DERBY”. I can appreciate your position in defending the city since your husband is mayor, but there has to be some responsibility taken by the city for the lack of oversight in something as simple as coupons.

As for not pointing fingers, the City of Oakley in its response put the blame on volunteers! Give me a break! My reporting is fine and no lies were told.

Cathy Aug 22, 2013 - 12:59 pm

Let’s see… City works with a local business and local groups (nonprofits or volunteer organizations) to put on an event to promote fishing for kids. Sounds good to me.

What part of “hosting” does the city take in the event versus the local business, versus the local group/ nonprofit? We don’t know. Should the city staff say we won’t do this project in less we get to check EVERYTHING before hand? Doesn’t seem practical to me. Volunteers make mistakes, businesses make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes- is this the city’s fault? No. Should the city eliminate projects that involve business or volunteer organizations? I hope people don’t feel that way. Throughout East County businesses and community organizations work with cities- I have no doubt that these things happen and most of the time people don’t draw attention to it because people are TRYING TO DO GOOD THINGS!

Perhaps we could focus on the positiveness of the fact that people came together to do something good, that kids enjoyed themselves and maybe learned something, We can focus on the generosity of volunteers giving their time, businesses sharing their resources and time, & that the city and a business that have had their challenges (putting it nicely) partnered on a great event.

I don’t think Oakley should have apologized- they didn’t do anything wrong. They announced that they came up with a fix, they didn’t throw the business or the volunteers under the bus but clarified what happened- a misunderstanding: someone put expired coupons in the goody bag by mistake!!!

Snarky comments and ignorant assumptions might make people less likely to go out and try to do a good thing in fear of being criticized publicly- so I ask you all to just knock it off. If you can do better go out volunteer, get involved and show us all how to do a perfect job all the time everyday.

For now, I thank the City of Oakley, Hook Line & Sinker and those volunteer organizations that put it on. And to whoever made the mistake of putting expired coupons- thanks for putting your time in to this event and I am sure you will never let this happen again (because it’s the people who care that volunteer for things like this!).

ECV Aug 22, 2013 - 2:32 pm

I think the point is (was), the CITY continues to make mistake after mistake. It is getting to be routine.

When are they going to begin making LESS mistakes?
………Or better yet, take a bit of RESPONSIBILITY?

Let’s not forget that City staff is paid to do things right. They are not volunteers.

Keeping it Real Aug 22, 2013 - 8:23 pm

It is very sad to see that instead of focusing on how successful the Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby ( a free event mind you) was, everyone is worried about expired coupons.

ECVsBrother Aug 22, 2013 - 9:56 pm

The funny part is giving coupons to promote out of city business. This is a rare event but I’m going with my big bro on this one. Too many mistakes over and over. Can I get a free mortgage loan while we are on free stuff?
