by ECT

On Tuesday June 28th at approximately 2:45 pm, Oakley PD units were dispatched to an auto vs pedestrian collision on East Cypress Rd near Bethel Island Rd.  When they arrived, officers found two victims with major injuries.

One victim, a 15 year old girl, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.  A second girl age 16, was transported via helicopter to UCSF Benioff Hospital with major injuries.

According to Oakley Police, the driver of the vehicle, Kristina Salvitti a 50 year old female with a last known address in Walnut Creek, remained at the scene and was cooperative with authorities.  The preliminary investigation determined the two teens were walking East along East Cypress Rd on the right shoulder of the roadway.  Ms. Salvitti was traveling East along Easy Cypress Rd in her vehicle.

Police say Ms. Salvitte veered off the roadway striking the girls, the vehicle continued for several hundred feet before finally coming to a stop.

“Ms. Salvitti displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  Ultimately, she was arrested and booked at the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence,” said police chief Chris Thorsen in a press release.

As of this morning, the victim transported to the hospital is in critical but stable condition.

Members of the Oakley Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit and Criminal Investigations Unit continue to follow up on the incident.  The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s office upon completion of the investigation and receipt of all laboratory results.

This case resulted in severe traffic congestion along East Cypress Rd and in the area of Bethel Island.  We would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as we worked through the processing of the crime scene.

Why can’t the city build sidewalks??? Isn’t that basic need in a community where they tout that it’s the best place for families??? This is why I am part of the morning congestion along Main Street and Cypress when I take my kids to school. The sidewalks run out on Main Street so how can I feel safe about my kids walking back and forth? Instead of building house after house for new families to come and congest these two lane roads we have now, how about widen the existing roads and build sidewalks or at the very least have a shuttle bus running in and out these neighborhoods that are so far from a store in walking distance that it would take an hour to get there in the heat at that!!

I so feel for those girls and their families. I could not imagine going through this. That lady driver should be ashamed and I can bet my last dollar that wasn’t the first time she drove under the influence.
