Oakley: Burgis Pulls Papers for Council Run

Diane Burgis, executive director of the Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed, pulled papers yesterday to run for Oakley City Council bringing the list of potential candidates to eight.

“I had a lot of friends that encouraged me to get involved when I brought up the idea so I decided to go for it. I saw there was three seats open for council and now is the time to get involved,” stated Burgis.

As executive director for a non-profit, it appears to have given her the experience needed to work for people across the city while understanding how government works. In her job as the executive director, she meets a lot of different people and deals with a lot of different personalities which provides her with experience on how to work with people across the board which will be required for such a position.

She explained that she looks forward to campaigning and really getting to know what people in Oakley think.

“I enjoy talking to different people and I look forward to hearing what people really think should be done in the City and see if I can work for them,” stated Burgis. “I want to be the person that brings what people want done in the city to the council.”

Ms. Burgis also explained with a smile on her face that she was proud that this will be the first election her 18-year old son gets to vote in and he gets to vote for his mom.  She laughed as she stated she at least had 1-vote.

L.J. Souza also pulled papers late yesterday.

Potential candidates have until August 10 to pull and submit the required paperwork to become a candidate, although Oakley will be extended because Jim Frazier is running for State Assembly District 11.
