Oakley: 1 Injured in Motorcycle vs. Tow Truck Accident

by ECT

At 4:19 pm yesterday, crews responded to a motorcycle versus tow truck on Live Oak Road near Orchard Park School in Oakley leaving one victim seriously injured and needing helicopter transport to a hospital in Walnut Creek.

Oakley Police, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District, American Medical Response and a REACH Helicopter all responded.

According to Oakley Police Chief Bani Kollo, preliminary reports show that no alcohol are drugs were involved in this accident. It appears the tow truck may have pulled in front of the motorcycle.

Here are some photographs of yesterdays accident.

Editors note: I have blurred the license plate and the victims face to protect privacy.

This road is so dangerous, Oakley really needs to fix it. Add a stop sign before the school, that would sovle a lot of speeding issues! I was wondering what was going on as I saw the helicopter land in my house looking out at the field.

Has Oakley ever provided a “most dangerous roads list”? I think they should create one and then work to improve road safety. Live Oak is probably in the top 3 behind E. Cypress and Laurel. Great photos and I hope the man will be okay.

According to my police officer, the problem isn’t the road. yes the roads may have the potential for a dangerous interaction between drivers, but the way people respond are the major cause of incidents. Meaning pay attention, drive beyond the hood of the car, obey the traffic laws, put down your cell phone, turn the radio down, anticipate problems, etc. I have lived on East Cypress for over 40 years. The number of accidents over the years are mind boggling. The majority of the accidents were caused by 2 things- either speed or DUI. sometimes both. At Laurel and Empire, the intersection isn’t the problem Its a nice urban intersection with good line of sight of the signals. The problem there is the idiots that speed up to make the light or just flat out run the light. That is why I never enter the intersection without checking that the cross traffic has STOPPED.

Thank You Barbara for saying what should be common sense. I two have lived in Oakley for 30 years and am always suprised when people blame a road and not the drivers on the road. One of the three basic speed laws is to drive a safe speed for the conditions not always the posted speed limit.

I am not sure I am buying it Barbara and Christian, accidents are because of many reasons which more than not are stupidity of a driver. Roads can sometimes be part of the overall issue with an accident. A giant pot hole, blind turn, black ice… etc. The only complaints I hear about this road is during school hours when kids are either coming or going from school.

Well not quite according to the Collision investigation manual (put out by the CHP) a person can not have a collision with the roadway, so there goes your pot hole example. Your other two examples are good examples of a violation of 22350 CVC speed unsafe for conditions.

Chapter 4 page 6 of the Collision investigations manual has the instructions for PRIMARY COLLISION FACTOR, “Select the one element or driving action which, in the officers opinion, best describes the primary or main cause of the collision. Whenever possible this SHOULD be a Vehicle Code (VC) violation.

There are roadway conditions that may contribute to a collision cause, construction debris in roadway, but they are not the primary factor in a collision any more than weather conditions are the cause of collisions.

Jim I agree with what you are saying. However it seems like most times there is an accident its always how dangerous a road is. I commute to work everyday and there are alot of areas that take extra caution and attention to navigate with out getting in an accident. If Live Oak is dangerous before and after school it is the responibility of Antioch School District to address these concerns so the children are safe. However if you are aware of the dangers of the raod it would be your own responsibility to either avoid the road or be extra cautious. In the end I think Chuck said it best the First Responders did an awesome job and I am very glad to see the the injured will hopefully make a full recovery.

People need to drive safer and leave earlier if you have to keep a schedule, look out for bikes on the road, no code or law can determine the drivers Decision to make the right choice and look out for your fellow man! Drive the limit, be Courteous to others, and most importantly it’s public roads, no one owns them, so leave the road rage where it belongs, NOWHERE.
