Oakland: 19-Year-Old Antioch Man Dies While Suspected DUI Driver Faces Murder Charges

According to CHP-Oakland, a suspected DUI driver has been arrested and booked on felony charges of murder and DUI after striking an killing a 19-year-old Antioch man after a vehicle crash.

CHP said the crash occured just before 2:30 am Sunday where there was a two vehicle traffic collision between a green Lexus ES300 & a Nissan Sentra that occurred on NB I-880 near Hegenberger Rd. Both vehicles were disabled in the #3 and #4 lanes of traffic.

The driver of the green Lexus exited his vehicle and was standing within a lane of traffic.

After a few minutes, a white Lexus sedan driven by Maury Butler, 56, out of Berkeley, Ca., did not immediately recognize the traffic collision or the driver of the green Lexus standing outside of his vehicle. The driver of the green Lexus was impacted by the white Lexus & was thrown into the #2 and #3 lanes of traffic where he would succumbed to his injuries.

It was determined that Butler was operating his motor vehicle while intoxicated and subsequently arrested for DUI. Additional information revealed that he had a suspended driver license for prior DUI’s and that he had three previous DUI convictions within the last 10 years.

According to the Alameda County Coroner, the victim was identified as Jesaun Benson-Garrett, 19, of Antioch.

Butler was booked into Santa Rita Jail for the felony charges of murder & DUI, & a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license.
