So she decides to run away from the cramped Houston apartment where she lives with her son & daughter-in-law. When she reaches a bus station, she falls into the hands of a sheriff whom her son and daughter-in-law have put on her trail.

The local sheriff, moved by her yearning to visit her girlhood home, offers to drive her out to what remains of Bountiful. Only too soon she learns that the friends of her youth have died or scattered, and her home is no longer the spacious mansion of her memories. When her son and daughter-in-law appear on the scene to take her back to Houston, she consents to return, secure in the knowledge that her existence will be enriched as a result of her last contact with Bountiful.

Meeting a variety of people along the way, her journey becomes an ultimately life-affirming and inspiring tale that examines the fragility of memory and celebrates the enduring power of hope and faith.
