Nov. 22: Antioch Animal Services Offers Many Choices for a New Pet

by ECT

Not every story of an animal ends with an euthanasia at the animal shelter, but there is sometimes a happy ending or a happy middle ground. Today, I want to share one of these happy stories.

Crash and Wobbles
Crash came to Antioch animal services as a stay. His situation is unique because he is blind. He is super gentle and loving and listens very well. He sits on command and waits for a treat and if he doesn’t get it in a timely fashion he will lay down and roll over to show you his tummy and stare eagerly into space waiting for the treat he earned.

One would think that the shelter would be to over stimulating of an environment for a blind dog like crash. When his stay first began we worried too. After some time, a very loving volunteer who crash has grown very fond of decided to pair him with another dog.

From that day forward Crash’s life changed forever. The volunteer paired him with a dog named wobbles. Wobbles is a senior female who has been used to breed. She has been bred so much she has sustained nerve damaged in her rear end causing her to be a little wobbly. Her spirit is as kind as her face and the volunteer new she would be a perfect fit with crash because of her maternal instinct and over whelming urge to take care of all the other dogs around her.

They grew to be close friends. Crash uses his body pressed up agents wobbles to help guide him while running and playing in the play yard. The pair now kennel mates snuggle together as they dream of their forever homes. The pair could not be happier.

We can only hope they will get adopted together but we are all prepared for the day they might split ways.

People always think that shelter stories are sad, but the story of crash and wobbles is a happy story and it didn’t begin until they were at the shelter. They both seem to have thrived from being here, they both have gained so much from one another.

Crash has a partner to help him play and wobbles gets to be momma one more time without all the fuss. The shelter may seem cold load and smelly to most of the public but for crash , wobbles and many other animals the shelter is full of love, compassion and promises of a new life that begins when they get adopted.

In Antioch when an animal is adopted they ring a bell to signify that an animal has been adopted. the whole place lights up with excitement, whispers of who was adopted and many volunteers and employees running out to say their good byes to the lucky dog or cat who starts their new life with the ring of the bell.

The shelter has its sad day to but the days are mostly filled with stories like this. You too can be part of a story that changes the life of an animal by being the happy ending and adopting or being part of the happy middle and volunteering.
