Niles Canyon Road Closed, Search Efforts to Continue Monday per CHP

by ECT

The California Highway Patrol announced that on Monday (1/23) they will be shutting down Niles Canyon tomorrow at 10:00 am for continued search efforts after a vehicle went into the creek.

On January 21, 2017 at approximately 10:45 am, CHP Dublin officers responded to a traffic collision on SR-84 Niles Canyon Road, east of Palomares Road. A driver of a silver Honda Accord traveling westbound drove to the left of the double yellow lines for unknown reasons and collided into a white Honda Accord which was traveling eastbound. After the initial impact, the silver Honda Accord veered to the right off of the roadway and plunged into the Alameda Creek.

Due to recent severe rain storms in the area, the water level of Alameda Creek was abnormally high and flowing fast. The vehicle became submerged and the driver of the vehicle and the vehicle have not been recovered.

According to the Alameda County Sheriffs Office, they are working this recovery effort with Dublin CHP, Fremont Fire, Fremont Police, Alameda County Fire and other state, county and city agencies. They are hoping to get search and rescue divers into the water to locate the vehicle as soon as possible.

As of right now Sunday afternoon, there was no recovery operation underway until conditions improve.

Niles Canyon is currently closed due to an unrelated Rock and Mudslide. They say that has further hampered recovery efforts.
