Meuser: Five Crazy Bills Passed by the California Democratic Controlled Legislature

by ECT

On January 5, 2015, a new California legislature will kick off the New Year by introducing many new bills.

It would be nice if the new legislature would focus on things that matter to California families, like improving our schools’ dismal performance record, making sure that we properly handle our drought, or fixing the impending pension problems that will continue to drive our state towards bankruptcy.

While California is the best place to live, the California legislature has made decisions that have led to us trailing the rest of the nation in many other categories.

  • California roads are ranked 45th.
  • California’s unemployment ranking is 49th.
  • California’s bond ranking is 49th.

However, rather than tackle these important topics, it seems as if the California legislature is going to waste taxpayers time and money by passing trivial bills that will not solve any major problems. Instead of working on the motor of California’s economy, the California Legislature is hell bent on passing legislation that makes sure there are four screws holding the license plate in place.

Here are five bills from the 2014 legislature that really just prove the point that the California legislature really seems out of touch with the rest of California:

  1. The California legislature decided to officially name the State Amphibian the California red-legged frog.  This is to go along with all our other state wildlife symbols like: State Animal, State Bird, State Freshwater Fish, State Insects, State Marine Fish, State Marine Mammal, State Marine Reptile, and State Reptile. I could go on, but out of 38 million people who live in California, how many of them really care if the state names the red-legged frog as the state Amphibian?
  2. The California legislature passed legislation to give free condoms to prisoners even though it is against the law for prisoners to have sex. Let me see if I get this straight, criminals are criminals, but rather than reform them, we are going to make sure that when they break the law, they will not suffer any health consequences for their actions. When are we going to let people know that there are consequences for their actions?
  3. The California legislature also requires that all BB guns be painted a different color so that they do not look like a real gun. I guess this is so that police do not see a teenager with a BB gun and shoot the teen. I am sure that criminals will never think about painting a real gun a different color so that way they could get the drop on the police if they committed a crime. Maybe a better solution is to teach our youth to respect those in authority and that one should not point a BB gun at a cop.
  4. The California legislature also saw fit to limit the number of practices that a high schooler can have in football. Why do we need to limit full contact practices to two 90 minute seasons per week? Even if it is scientifically necessary to limit full contact practices in High School, why is this a decision for the legislature to make?  I know concussions have been in the news a lot, and having suffered a concussion myself, I fully appreciate the gravity of the situation. However, it is not the place of the legislature to be telling high school kids how much they can play football. The legislature would be much better served by figuring out a way to free up all the middle management bureaucracy that is burdening our school districts and stealing much needed funds away from our teachers and the classroom.
  5. The California legislature has definitely decided that it was going to play big brother and tell everyone what to do when it passed a law that prohibits beer manufacturers from making coupons to sell their product for less in this state. We already see enough advertising on beer products in this state, but you as a consumer can never buy it on sale because manufacturers cannot offer it to you at a discount. Not sure who the State is trying to protect here, is it the big beer manufacturers’ profits?

If I am elected to be your state senator, it is my goal to tackle the issues that are important to California families.

I am willing to work with anyone regardless of party who is willing to take on the great challenges that California is facing. I do not want to go to Sacramento to just be an author of another bill. The people of California are sending individuals to Sacramento to solve problems and I want to be your problem solver.

This mouth piece needs to go away. He made several statements but failed to name a single bill. What a tool.

For those of us more conservative dems, for those “decline to states” and those republicans that will actually think before they just hand their vote to someone, you are going to have to produce something better than this to have us consider you.

It is easy for someone that hasn’t worked in the legislature to just pick 5 things that appear trivial or “crazy” as you put it. I agree that there are some bills passed that have very little impact in the scheme of things but let’s talk about something even more “crazy”- the partisan BS where people block stuff just to make sure the other team doesn’t score. I suggest we need people that will be going to Sacramento and working with our local representatives and our folks in Washington DC to actually solve problems.

In my limited observations of you (since you really don’t seem to have done anything yourself) I haven’t seen a problem solver, a doer, a great thinker or someone that brings people together, I want that for my next state senator.

Mr Meuser- the red legged frog is a native frog to CA- I won’t debate whether it should have been a bill to designate it our state frog. I suspect that designation helps protect it as it is an endangered or specie of concern. We do need to protect our environment and the native wildlife. Why don’t you tell us your position on such issues? I am sure it is because you don’t have a real position on those things or are afraid to share it as you know folks in East County do care about their environment including preventing Southern California from building the tunnels- a project your party seems to be very much in favor of.

Our jails and prisons are crowded and we don’t have enough staffing to enforce the no sex rules – I agree there shouldn’t be a need to put condoms in prisons but why don’t you be a big boy and start talking about SOLUTIONS to the bigger problem of jail overcrowding and the problem of not having a budget to staff the prisons and jails?? How about crime prevention, improving education and other programs that keep people off the street and help them have better options? That is called leadership!

Orange tips are necessary as there are parents that purchase their kids these very life like toy guns and if it helps a police officer pause in the heat of a situation then it is a good thing. You are right there are possibly bad guys that will paint their gun tips orange- but really why would they? If they are using a gun in a crime do they want people to take them seriously? Of course they do. Criminals NORMALLY use guns to intimidate someone in to doing something. Criminals normally don’t want to be caught so they usually won’t shoot since that would draw more attention to the crime being conducted. Criminals know if they shoot there will be more attention to the crime…. Seriously, do I need to go in to this? If someone was robbing a bank with a orange tipped gun I wouldn’t take them as seriously as someone with a real gun. Your reasoning makes me question your ability to see the big picture. Something I need in a leader.

Sometimes the legislature jumps on a band wagon like the head injuries issues related to football. You must realize that sometimes law makers have to make laws to help protect stupid people from themselves and to protect others that must live with them. There are parents out there that will make their children practice more than the next kid in order to make them more eligible for the coveted starter positions and college considerations. Just like helmets, seat belts, car seats and other tools we require to keep people safe (even though lots of us have common sense and act safely) limiting practice hours helps even the playing field for all participating AND helps protect our kids from getting brain damage before they become tax paying voters. It is common sense and unfortunately you don’t seem to understand that sometimes the role of the legislature to make laws to protect people. (Besides the consideration of costs of injuries on kids – hospital bills, loss of school, long term affects of head injuries and so much more that society ends up paying in the long run)

On the beer issue- I don’t know anything or really care. The beautiful thing about our system is that we can change things. I didn’t hear you stand up and squawk about this as it was happening. If people really didn’t want this to happen they should have called their representatives or should call them now. If the beer companies felt coupons were a great marketing tool that helped bring the beer drinkers to purchase more of their beer they would have sent their lobbyists to Sacramento. Based on my observations of this site and the Facebook page for this site I think they are beer enthusiasts but this law was never mentioned. I think it is a non issue.

We need real leadership not some guy that has done nothing publicly since his last unsuccessful campaign 2 years ago. This is all you could come up with? Nice try. We have a great liberal democrat in Susan Bonilla and an even better moderate democrat in Joan Buchanan. Those two have skin in the game- they have actually done something. They have a body of work that speaks for them. You have this pitiful editorial, good luck with that.
