Things sure are getting better Mayor Harper. This is getting out of hand. If it wasn’t for ECT doing these stats the way he organizes them, no one would know just how bad it is. Mayor Harper, you need to issue an apology for your statement or offer a full explanation because things are certainly not better.

The sad fact is the Council has their heads in the sand and think putting more officers on the streets will solve crime. It will help respond to incidents, but it will not prevent crime. The council needs to take their heads out of the sand and get involved on the ground creating activities and keeping kids and young adults busy. I am ready to vote all of your a$$’s out!

The sad part is this council thinks its doing a good job, the truth is they have already failed.

Very well said

A quick solution would be for this council to stop taxing anything that moves or breaths. They need to become more business friendly to create jobs so people do not have to commit crime. People working are less likley to be bored and get into trouble. Sad city council. Just sad.

Really! May 23, 2014 - 7:55 am

These are not bored ppl, they came from Hunters Point, East Oakland etc. They brought the crime with them. You need to wake up. This crime has nothing to do with economy. It’s a way of life. Are you not paying attention to the trials after these shootings happen. Gangs from Hunters Point & East Oakland Projects. Do you ever notice when someone gets shot here they have ties to one of these areas. It’s funny how all kinds of ppl get up everyday & commute to work or school, but there is always someone out there that needs to give these losers an excuse. My husband commutes, works double shifts. My daughter goes to school & works in the city. I commuted while working at night & raising my kids as a single mom. Really, give me a break. That is why the US is full of losers, & our jobs are being taken over by foreigners, people like you want to coddle everyone. People from other countries know what it’s like to be hungry & not have endless supply of housing or money.

My wife and I have lived here over 30 years. I know this is a “cop out” but we are selling our home and leaving. We just can’t live like this.
Goodbye and best wishes for all those who stay and fight.

Disgusted Home owner May 23, 2014 - 7:28 am

It’s not a cop out. Our city screwed us over. We are doing the same thing as soon as we can.

Damn, that’s a lot of crime for just 1 week!

Reginald Jamal Brown May 23, 2014 - 10:19 am

What positive thing has Harper brought to the city since he was Mayor?

Didn’t he win the election by flashing his badge on his billboard ads and quoting “Zero tolerance for crime”?

Has crime decreased or actually increased since he took office?

Concerned Antioch resident May 23, 2014 - 11:18 am

There hasn’t been an honest assessment/admission by the council as to the key reasons why these crimes are escalating in Antioch. Most residents know that a primary reason for the crimes is the unsavory element that has moved in from Oakland, Richmond and other such places. As long as homes in Antioch are being sold to investors who turn around and rent to such undesirables, the increase in crime will continue. Landlords, nor government agencies, aren’t being held accountable to whom they rent. As previously mentioned, having more officers isn’t going to reduce the crime. It’s like putting a band-aid over a wound without cleaning it first– the wound will not heal and will be subject to infection, which could lead to amputation or death.

Maris Bennett May 24, 2014 - 1:14 pm

So true. The criminal element who’ve moved here have created a less safe and increasingly undesirable place to live for all. A way of life in many cases passed down from generation to generation: easier to work the system instead of actually work. And parents either ‘unaware’ of their kids’ activities or uncaring. There’s no ‘perfect’ place to live. Even gated communities are susceptible to crime. But our city leaders need to admit to the growing problem & get on with trying to solve it. We can’t turn Antioch over to the unsavory element.

Insane crime has taken Antioch like a cancer. East County needs a new jail facility. Antioch would be the proper location. It saves gas and time for that long ride to jail in Martinez only to end back up in Antioch the day after to do the same dumb thing.
