Martinez Police Nab Pair of Mailbox Theft Suspects

by ECT

On Thursday March 16 at about 12:53 pm, Martinez Police Officers responded to the area of Tea Tree Court for a report of a subject trying to pry a lock on a mailbox.  The subject was seen fleeing the area in a black Mercedes C230.

Upon arrival to the area, officers located the vehicle which was about to get on eastbound highway 4 from Muir Rd.  The vehicle was stopped and evidence of mail theft was located in the vehicle.

Community mailboxes in the Starflower area and at 486 Morello Av. were believed to have been tampered with and mail stolen.  Suspects Steven Morgan (30 years old) and Natalie McClenahan (27 years old) were arrested.  Both suspects are Solano county residents.

The suspects were in possession of a homemade key that unlocked the community mailboxes in these areas.

The US Postal Inspectors were contacted and responded to assist with the investigation.

This is the part I find interesting: “The suspects were in possession of a homemade key that unlocked the community mailboxes in these areas.” What I’ve heard over and over again is, “Well, nobody really has enough expertise to do lock-picking or key-bumping, and the idea that anyone could make a key that could work, well, that’s just pretty ridiculous. . . .” Yeah, apparently it’s not. I get that there’s a difference between these keys and house keys, but aren’t people vastly underestimating the knowledge and skill that’s actually out there? Do we need to wise up, or what?
