Martinez City Councilwoman to Run for Contra Costa County Board of Supervisor Seat

A Martinez Councilwoman has announced her intention to run for a seat held by Contra Costa County Board of Supervisor Federal Glover since 2000.

On Thursday, Councilwoman Anamarie Avila Farias announced her intention to pull papers and run for the District 5 Board of Supervisor seat.

“I am excited to offer the voters of this district an opportunity to hear fresh ideas and alternative points-of-views on the important issues that affect the quality-of-life of our residents. I feel there is a desperate need to infuse passion into the district, to create open-minded and innovative solutions that address the community infrastructure issues surrounding public safety, transportation, housing, small business and workforce development. I am committed to working on preserving and growing the middle class through economic development initiatives,” Avila Farias said moments before pulling papers.

AccDistrict-5-maprording to Mary Jo Rossi, Supervisor Glovers campaign manager,  she indicated in December that Supervisor Glover there was no doubt he was going to run for re-election. She indicated that now that he is back from a heart and kidney transplant that he is ready to get to work in completing his many goals as a county supervisor.

District Five spans the north shore of Contra Costa County,including the cities of Hercules, Martinez, Pittsburg and portions of Pinole and Antioch as well as the unincorporated communities of Alhambra Valley, Bay Point, Briones, Rodeo, Pacheco, Crockett, Tormey, Port Costa, Mt. View,Vine Hill, Reliez Valley, and Clyde.

Energetic community leader launches grassroots effort to connect with District 5 voters

Lifelong Contra Costa County resident and current Martinez City Councilmember Anamarie Avila Farias has officially signaled her intention to run for the District 5 seat on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors by pulling candidate papers at the Registrar of Voters today.

“I am excited to offer the voters of this district an opportunity to hear fresh ideas and alternative points-of-views on the important issues that affect the quality-of-life of our residents. I feel there is a desperate need to infuse passion into the district, to create open-minded and innovative solutions that address the community infrastructure issues surrounding public safety, transportation, housing, small business and workforce development. I am committed to working on preserving and growing the middle class through economic development initiatives,” Avila Farias said moments before pulling papers.

By virtue of being deemed a professional and leader in Housing and Community Development, in 2015 Councilmember Avila Farias was appointed by Governor Jerry G. Brown Jr. to serve as a Board Director for the California Housing Finance Agency.

Background
Councilmember Avila Farias is a dedicated public servant of 22 years who has worked in several local government agencies administering Housing & Economic Development programs. Nearly a decade was spent with the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing & Community Development.

Along with the California Housing Finance Agency board position she is also active in her hometown, in Contra Costa County and throughout the state. Councilmember Avila Farias was elected to the Martinez City Council in 2012. She was a Martinez Planning Commissioner for eight years, and also served on the Park & Recreation and Marina Commission. Councilmember Avila Farias is a member of the League of California Cities, where she serves on 3 different boards: 2nd Vice President of East Bay Division, Housing Community and Economic Development Policy Committee Member, and a current Board Member for the Latino Caucus. Councilmember Avila Farias is actively involved with youth programs and is a current Board Member for the Juvenile Hall Auxiliary of Contra Costa County.

Councilmember Avila Farias earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management and a Master of Science in Information Systems Management from the University of San Francisco. She is proudly raising her two young children with her husband Isidro Farias, an architect.

Tony Tiscareno is supporting her, I can’t support her. Looks like I need someone else to enter the race. I am not a fan of Glover either.

Time for some fresh ideas at the County level. Gioia and Glover have been there way too long. Sorry boys but it’s time for you to go.
