Marine Patrol: Deputies Swim 100 Yards to Shore After Boat Sinks

by ECT

Two Deputy Sheriffs from the Contra Costa County Marine Patrol safely swam to shore near Bay Point on Wednesday after their boat sank off the shoreline.

According to Jimmy Lee, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s office, a Marine Patrol vessel was traveling along the shoreline Wednesday at about 9:23 am when it began to take in water at an uncontrollable rate. One of the deputies tried to navigate the vessel back to shore but the engines failed.

Both deputies at no choice as the boat began to sink and had to swim 100 yards to the nearest shoreline. No one was injured.

Lee said the location of the sunken vessel was boomed off as a precaution. Marine salvagers removed the boat from the water Wednesday night. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.

The Sheriffs Office did not clarify which boat sank or how much they paid for the boat.

Last July, Marine Patrol welcomed two new boats to the fleet.

It was one of the Moose boats… Not one of the newer boats, I think. Really expensive, either way…

Swam to shore, with personal flotation devices on, one would presume. Its the law.
