Updated: Man Arrested After Striking Officer in the Head During Oakley Cityhood Celebration

by ECT

On the evening of Saturday July 1, a man was arrested for assaulting an Oakley Police officer during the Oakley Cityhood Celebration.

Police are expected to release additional information later Monday, however, police did confirm they arrested a man who has a history of run-ins with law enforcement and he did violate his probation.

The incident occurred when an officer attempted to break up a fight when the man came up and struck the officer in the head and attempted to flee the area before being tackled by a bystander.

Malcolm Barfield, 24, was then arrested on multiple charges including felony resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and violation of probation. He was booked in Martinez Detention Facility.

Update per Oakley Police

Although a large number of Oakley PD Officers were assigned to the Cityhood Celebration (Saturday, July 1st), at approximately 9:20 p.m. a fight broke out between two juvenile females in the Basin next to Freedom High School.
When the females began fighting, a crowd gathered. Officers were able to separate the females. During the incident, a subject came out of the crowd and struck one of our Officers from behind. The suspect then attempted to flee into the crowd. He was apprehended by a citizen and the Oakley Officer.
Mr. Malcolm Barfield, a 24 year old male was arrested and booked into the main jail for Felony Resisting Arrest, Battery on a Police Officer, and Violation of Probation. The Oakley Officer was treated and released from a local hospital, he is expected to make a full recovery.

We’d like to thank the citizens who assisted us in this matter, as well as all those who attended this year’s family-friendly event. It saddens us that a few would seek to spoil such a wonderful community celebration.

Fortunately, a relatively few attendees witnessed the incident.
We look forward to seeing you again at the Cityhood Celebration next year!

There are not enough police to cover it all- sooo I suggest the department purchase a couple of drones!!! There was one flying around on july1. Every time he flew over Teresa Lane -behind Robert- the fireworks calmed down for a bit- this guy sets of fireworks frequently- soo sorry your officer was assaulted. Thoughts and prayers for you all.

Cops need to stop “hanging out” in the parking lot and patrol the area. Not one cop was seen in the basin until something broke out.
