Local Photographer Launches “The Beauty of Antioch” Project

by ECT

Antioch business owner and photographer Michael Pohl announced Saturday that he has launched The Beauty of Antioch Project.

Pohl says his goal with the photography series is to create an online blog that includes photography and historical record of Antioch all in a single place. The project highlights all of the beautiful views, details, buildings, etc. found all over Antioch, as well as providing the interesting history or special meaning behind the subject in a few paragraphs.

He says the idea came to him after investing time by getting involved in the community with the Antioch Chamber of Commerce and is in the process of joining Antioch Rotary.

“I came up with the idea a few ways. As I’ve gotten more involved in the community, I started learning about the history in Antioch and how fascinating it is,” explained Pohl.  “There’s so many historical spots and landmarks that so many people don’t even know about! I wanted to publish it in an easy to access format, as well as providing a nice image to go along with the small facts. I also found that people kept asking me what the significance of certain pictures were, and how they were stunned at how amazing the photographs were, but didn’t realize the importance of the subject of it.”

He also wants to use the project as a type of promotional tool to shed a positive light on the City of Antioch and inject some positivity into the city.

“Antioch gets a really bad reputation, and while Antioch does have its problems, not enough people bother to go out and find all the positive in the city,” says Pohl. “I hope this project can help start a movement to clean up the City of Antioch and give citizens hope on polishing up this precious diamond we call Antioch.”

He added while the problems within the city need to be addressed, the community as a whole also needs to focus on all of the good that Antioch is.

He says in time, this could be considered an online Antioch Encyclopedia.

“I would say that one could argue that this project could turn into an Antioch Encyclopedia,” explained Pohl.  “My hope is that in a few months I’ll have educated people on everything from where the Smith Brothers landed to the various towns in Black Diamond, and everything in between. There’s so much history in Antioch that I could put out a weekly post for years and still not cover everything!”

I love Michael’s images of Antioch, you know it’s a great photograph when you wake up thinking about it the next day. I’m so grateful to have him capturing our city in a beautiful way, I know it’s much harder than it looks. Just yesterday my son Luke Johnson and I were taking a hike in Arizona and talking about Michael and his progress, I admire him so much. He reminds me of myself when I was his age, I have no doubt that he will be representing our community 20 years from now in a big way. Michaels progress, determination and generosity is a good example of this quote “you are never going to learn to fly if you don’t jump”
