Lightning Strikes American Flag of Oakley Home, Middle School Also Impacted

by ECT

At 9:19 am Thursday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to several calls after a burst of lightning hit a home on O’Hara Ct injuring one woman.

Oakley-Lightning-ECCFPDAccording to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District, the woman was outside when the bolt of lightning struck a home and the charge from the strike gave her a “zap-like” feeling and needed medical treatment. The lightning struck an American Flag pole sending pieces of wood across the drive way.

The impact also knocked their ceiling fan to the ground inside the home. She was taken into an AMR ambulance and no further details were provided on scene regarding her condition.

East Contra Costa Firefighters also responded to O’Hara Park Middle School after the lightening and thunder knocked out their phone lines and left an alarm sounding in the main office. Firefighters said the building was not struck.

Throughout Oakley, car alarms went off and some traffic signals also had to be reset.

The School District sent out the following message to O’Hara Park students and families:

Good Morning O’Hara Park Families-

Due to the storm this morning, the phones at O’Hara Park School are currently down.  Students are in class and the school day is going on as normal.  The fire department was dispatched to the school as a precaution but there is no fire.  Please know the safety of our students is our number one priority.

Thank you for helping to get the word out.
