Letter to Editor: Fiscal Responsibility in Senate District 7 Special Election

by ECT

Fiscal Responsibility:

Per the Voter Information pamphlet for the special election in Senate District 7 (SD7), Joan Buchanan commits to being Fiscally Responsible and Steve Glazer says he’s a Fiscal Conservative.   All the candidate’s statements say they want balanced budgets.

But influencing where the money goes is just as important as a balanced budget.  Note that Susan Bonilla is running for a Senate seat when she’s just been re-elected to the Assembly.  If Bonilla’s elected, it triggers a special election for her vacated Assembly seat.  The price tag to Contra Costa County is upwards of $1.5 million dollars (based on the Registrar of Voters estimated cost of the Primary and General election for the current SD7 special election).

So, Bonilla is willing to cause a $1.5 million additional cost to the county for one step up the ladder of her political career.  Is this Fiscally Conservative or Responsible?  To create a balanced budget, that special election money has to come from somewhere.  What County programs and services will be shortchanged to make that happen?

Thank you for your consideration,

Wow, I hadn’t thought about it that way. Very good point made. The other thing that makes me wonder about Bonilla is all the mailers we are getting from her. It seems I have been getting multiple mailers from her everyday the last couple days- what a waste of money! Each one of those is thousands of dollars. I look at all the groups and organizations buying these mailers for her and wonder who she is beholden to. Her campaign is reminding me of the Tim Sbranti race- all that union support didn’t end up helping him either. If Bonilla is willing to have the voters foot the bill to replace her so she can climb the political ladder AND she is beholden to all these groups and organizations I think she is the LEAST likely candidate to get my vote. I think I will go for Buchanan. She has a proven record and she was out in East County all the time when she represented us.
