by ECT

The following letter was submitted by Deborah White who thanked Oakley Police Officer Jones who responded to her beloved dog Wolfman (aka Wolfie) who had been hit by a vehicle and was deceased.

To the Chief of Police (Oakley, Calif.)
Re: Officer Jones

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wanted to bring an act of kindness by one of your officers to your attention. On Wednesday October 14, 2015, Officer Jones, a motorcycle Officer, was unfortunately called to a street close to my residence about a small dog who had been hit by a car and unfortunately was deceased.

I was at work and answered my cell phone to late to speak to the person on the other end. I was trying to call back, when the same number rang through again. The person on the other end introduced himself as Officer Jones and wanted to know if I had a dog, I told him I did. He said he had bad news for me, my little dog had not survived.

I told him I was at work in Brentwood, but, that I would be right there. He waited for me to arrive, watched me walk across the street and began to help me feel better about what had happened.

He told me that a nice female citizen, whose name I do not know, had stopped to pull my pup from the street. He said he found my phone  number on my pups collar and didn’t think it was right to call the pound, but, TO CALL ME FIRST.

I was in tears and could not speak yet, he kept on trying to sooth me, and continued to tell me a story, about his service dog whom he must have loved very much. How they had served together and the dog was retired and had recently passed on. And how hard it was for him to deal with. He said he knew how I must feel. I could feel his pain and his warmth.

To some people that may not sound like much but, to me, it meant a lot. I am the Grooming manager for Brentwood Petco. I have been an animal person all my life, I have been a groomer off and on for over 40 yrs.

oakley-PD-dog-2Wolfman my Pomeranian was only two years old, he was not wise in the ways of the street. His death has left a big hole in my heart.

I just wanted to say that your officers act of kindness was above and beyond his call of duty in my eyes. He saved me from having to go retrieve my beloved Pet from the animal services, he waited for me to come home, he didn’t just leave my pet alone, he treated me very gently, and even helped me across my street when my tears were blinding me.

I will never forget him, his compassion or his gentle words in my time of need. I have taken Wolfman down to Oakley vets office and he will be cremated. When my time comes he will be riding on the back of a whale with me.

I am crying as I write this but, it isn’t as hard as it could have been, without his concern for a pup he didn’t even know. He has made my transition to this loss bearable.

Thank you Officer Jones, I will not forget you.

Sincerely,

Deborah White

As a pet person, I am grateful for this officer taking the time and showing such compassion to Ms. White during this painful time. Losing an animal is losing a family member to many pet parents. I am so sorry for both Ms. White’s loss and also Officer Jones’ loss too. I appreciate how much time he took to take care of her, and hope that he stays with the department for a very long time! He will be invaluable to the force if he is able to help people in the smaller of situations, such as this, so he will be an immense help in even bigger ones. This attitude is a treasure to have!!

I also appreciate Ms. White recognizing Officer Jones, and taking the time to show how nicely he treated her. The great officers on the force aren’t recognized nearly as often as the bad officers or bad situations are, so I am very happy to hear about a good officer out there helping someone out, despite the sadness of the situation.

I also thank East County Today for posting this letter! It’s really nice to read these positive pieces about the community!
