George “Poppy” Ellsworth Hodgerney: April 1,1948 – April 23, 2018

George “Poppy” Ellsworth Hodgerney, resident of Brentwood, California, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 in Pleasanton, California at the age of 70 years.

George was born on February 1, 1948 in Painesville, Ohio. He was the son of Harry Hodgerney and Jenny Crane, and one of five children. Their family relocated to California in 1961. He met his loving wife of 48 years, Sandi Mirabile in 1968, and they were married in 1970. George and Sandy became parents to two daughters, Jodi and Bobbi. He was a very dedicated Grandfather to his seven grandchildren.

George entered into the Army in 1967 at the age of 18 where he was part of the 101st Airborne, and served in Vietnam.  As a result of his service he was awarded a Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and an Army Commendation Medal.

After leaving the military, he helped build B.A.R.T., and Los Medano’s College as part of the Peter Kiewet Company.  He was later hired by B.A.R.T. to finish out his professional career, retiring in 2005.

George also dedicated many hours to VFW  Post 10789 and all of his fellow veterans. He had many hobbies including woodwork, taking care of his many dogs and farm animals, and traveling with his RV.

He will be deeply missed by everyone, most especially his wife Sandi, daughters Jodi (Wayne) and Bobbi, grandchildren Michael, Miranda, Desiree, Daphnie, Brylin, Brooke, and Jiovanni ͞Georgie͟, and siblings Harvey (Penny), Richard, and Connie. George was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Jenny as well as his brother Harry.

A viewing will be held Monday, April 30, 2018 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Brentwood Funeral Home at 839 1st Street, Brentwood, CA 94513.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the VFW at 757 1st Street, Brentwood, CA 94513. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery at 2200 E. 18th Street, Antioch, CA. Reception to follow back at the VFW post in Brentwood.
